Now I see you have a color difference to the aft end of the fuselage. I am assuming the aft end is covered with an iron on covering?

the whole airplane is covered with MONOKOTE, except the cowl/canopy/hatch/wheel pants. these are painted on.
it is the missile red from Monokote.

the paint i used for "red" is the true red from Klass Kote.

i just emailed Nate from Klass Kote, he will get me back on line. He will send me a pint of the KlassKote mixed "MISSILE RED" to match the Monokote, and the KlassKote YELLOW, to match the Monokote yellow.

KlassKote Missile red will require mixing 5 different colors.
the yellow is only 2.

it was my failure of calling him, as he would have told me this before i ordered it.

'i misunderstood his color match graph.

i will have to sand all that down, and repaint it!

Yeah matching colors can be tough. Hopefully it all works out for you in the end.

It is bittersweet!
That is by far the best paint job i have ever done. I am amazed at the lustre and the quality of the paint job. There is not a single paint run or accumulation anywhere. It really came out good.
the painting was done with a first mist on spray, leaving little beads of paint, can still see primer in background. waited 20 minutes, then i applied a 2nd coat, that was more or less "granular in appearance" but no more primer could be seen. then i waited 30 minutes and applied the last coat of paint which went on looking "wet". total paint mixed was 4 ounces total of paint with catalyst (had to wait 40 minutes to allow to induct), then i added 2 ounces of thinner.
Sad part is i have to do it all over again. Do not know if it will come out as good as the 1st shot??
I had to remove the masking tape so that the seam does not get too accumulated with paint and to thick that it breaks off when i peel of the vinyl. SO far, this removal was easy and no paint came off anywhere. Again, that vinyl masking tape from 3M is the bomb!! i will now wait for the new paint to arrive and will post pictures once it is done. let's see if it matches up!!!

The KlassKote paint sprays very well, you should get the same beautiful results the next time around just hopefully with a better color match.

I am currently recovering my 1/3 Cub that was covered in Solartex. I am using the Stits process this time around. A little cheaper than KK and hopefully looks as good.

Any recommendations for a spray gun that works well with KK? Specifically looking for something I can pick up at Harbor Freight since there's one close by. (Yes, I know HF quality can be sketchy sometimes.) Thanks!

just get you a cheap HVLP touch up gun.
less than 20 dollars.
The key with KK paint or any other paint, if you are going to use a spray gun is the paint has to be thinned.

with KK, this is the procedure:
1. mix equal parts of paint and catalyst
2. wait 30 to 40 minutes to allow it to induce,.

now, this paint is thick, it will not work with any spray gun, it can be brushed on as is, if you want to use a spray gun, then

3. mix the paint with the recommended thinner at a ratio of let's say
3 parts paint to 1 part thinner.

4. test the paint on a piece of cardboard. if the paint runs, it is too thin, this will probably not be the case. But if the paint sputters out and leaves globs, then it is still too thick, add some more thinner, till the paint comes out even without running.
the actual amount of thinner will be determined by multiple factors, such as room temp, humidity, paint, etc...

good luck.

Painting sounds much more complicated than it actually is.

Get an HVLP gun and buy some cheap paint and just play around spraying cardboard. You will quickly learn how thick/thin the paint needs to be and what pressure to spray at.

I do suggest buying inline filters to filter any moisture out of the compressed air while spraying. This will reduce the chances of the paint fish eyeing on you. These filters are pretty cheap and just screw on at the spray gun.
Later!!

I use the cheap HVLP guns from HF. I found the small 4 ounce gun about perfect for plane painting. Using the cardboard or a sheet of glass to get the pressure set is the best way to do it. KK paint is the easiest paint I have used but a bit pricey.
