Default Oil mixes for DLE 20 and RCGF 32 - opinons please!

I have a DLE 20 that's run for a couple of seasons with Sthil synthetic 2-stroke oil at the specified ratio of 32:1.
I also have an RCGF 32 engine that hasn't been run yet - the specified oil is Redline racing at 30:1

I already have a stock of Redline Racing oil - I use it in my DA 50. It's mixed at 40:1 so it has a dedicated can.

I would like to use a single mix for the DLE 20 and the RCGF 32 so I need to know two things:

1. Will the DLE 20 run happily on RedLine oil?
2. Will the RCGF 32 run happily on a 32:1 mix, or, alternatively, will the DLE 20 run happily on a 30:1 mix?

Cheers!

Last year we ran a bunch of DLE 20 cc engines using a 32:1 mix. We put over 800 flights on four or five engines in one season.

By mid season the cylinder heads were pretty full of carbon deposits even using synthetics, so we cut the mix to 40:1 and have been using that w/o problems since.

This greatly reduced the carbon buildup on new engines.

run the sthil synthetic at 40 to 1 and leave it there....it takes longer to break in but it doesnt hurt the engine at all

Yup, found that out via trial and error.

Thanks for the verification.

I have been running Red Line at 40:1 but hear great things about the sthil plus it's cheaper. I don't have to drive across town to get it.
Have you tried ethanol free gas yet? I switched and found the engines seemed to run cooler with a better idle. Might be my imagination but I like it

I use Red Line 30:1 in my DLE 20 w/o any problems. Going on second season.

You sure can't hurt an engine with more oil.

True, but you can gunk them up. Enough really is enough.

I cast a wide net with this question and I got a lot of responses. The consensus, this thread notwithstanding, is that all of my engines will run fine on Redline at 32:1, so that's my plan.

As for gas, I do use ethanol free. Shell 92 octane.

I have an article from the "tired old man" you may have seen his writings in magazines. He states that 32 to 50 to 1 works for everything run smoother cleaner stronger and last longer.

I previously posted that after three "virtual years" of running the DLE 20's, even with synthetics, at a 32:1 ratio, the heads get really gunked up.

Dropping the mix to 40:1 after initial breakin completely stops the fouling.

32:1 doesn't initially "hurt" the engine, but over time you may be buying into other problems.

Read the bottle of Stihl HP Ultra, it is pretty specific, it says to mix at 50:1 with 89 octane gas. IMO this ratio would be safe to run on anything with needle bearings at both ends of the rod. Too much synthetic will lead to stuck rings and burned pistons.

Yup, the engines do seem to benefit from LOWERING the amount of oil, as counter intuitive as that sounds.

I haven't tried 50:1 yet though.

I use Stihl or Husky 50 to 1 syn. e/Ethanol free preminum 92 oct. in my planes and Chainsaws. The saws have to work much harder than my plane engines. All function well and yes the engines like the fuel ratio and run well on that mix.
50 to 1 is the reccommended mix and the oil is blended for it, not 30-40 to 1. Just keep the load down for the first several tanks..........as long as they run cool they are fine.
If you have a bushed lower end or such then go with the makers specs.

HA!! whataya know!.. I drive through (Athol) there every sunday and Thursday on my way to and from work!! My old man and I have both been using Amsoil Sabre 100:1.. designed for it and we toss in a metal conditioner at 2oz/gallon and these little engines love it.. the bigger ones really like it too.. He had a 26cc that he ran 40:1 in and when he started with the 100:1, it blew crap out for probably 15-20 flights before it started cleaning up.. the engine tuned better, ran better, started better and it seems to run better at idle as well.. I'm not saying its the only way to go, but we have been very happy with it. Our DLE 20s have really liked it also. I have a 15cc that will be getting fired for the first time pretty soon, I expect it will do it nicely.

My experience with the Amsoil Saber at 100:1 is a bit different. Yes the engines ran well, they just didn't run long. My first DA 150 I got second hand, the original owner was running 100:1 so that is what I continued to run. After a few months the engine started to behave erratic at idle and was sent it to DA. It came back with new bearings and crankshaft and a recommendation to stop using 100:1. Since then I have used 50:1 either Penzoil air cooled or Sthil HP Ultra.

were you running any additives with that 100:1?.. I made the switch at the advice of a fellow modeler who has had years of use with it but only with the conditioner additive.. by no means am I saying that 100 is the only way to go, but hearing negative experience helps find potential future problems with running 100:1..

Kirby,

When the weather improves bring a plane and you can fly off our new asphalt runway.

Let me know.

which place are you talking about?.. I have time and funds available this year to travel to some events and such, I'm committed to a few but have probably 2 trips worth left over to make a trip or two somewhere close like a trip to the panhandle or something like that..

If you guys have a website, that would be excellent. If not, I will keep in contact with you on here. I have a number of weekends spoken for this summer, but if you guys have something going on and I can make it, I would love to try and make that happen. You said you have fresh asphalt, what size of planes are you capable of accepting at the field?.. I am looking at the satellite view of what I assume is your field.. just south of the tracks that are right at the 35 up to 50 zone, facing north.. on the east side of 41 it appears. It looks like a sizable field.. you travel from Athol all the way to Rathdrum to fly??.. what happened with the Farragut field?.. I also saw that McGee started a field over there on the other side of the hiway from Silverwood.. looks like a place a guy doesnt want to have a mishap.. fill me in on anything you can!!

as for the swap meet, I probably wont be able to make that because I am only home on the weekends so I tend to try and make the most of limited time I have available..

You have the right field, Quarter scale works fine, we are just within the airport so have to keep it @ about 400 ft. (ama rules). It's about 15 mins. for me. Just a little longer than to Farragut. Rathdrum is only 7 miles from my house.
As far as McGee, I stay away(far) from him. He was not allowed to re-join the Farragut Club because of his actions and attitude. Took his marbles and left.

My phone no. is 208-755-8479

I mix my Amsoil Sabre at about 60 - 75 to 1 and have had great results. Maybe I am just lucky, but I am not going to argue with success.
