Starting to wonder if anyone here ever built anything other than models?

1. Measure twice.
2. Cut once.

Taken from personal experience, as I survey my pile of lumber scraps, all of which after being cut twice, were still too short!

I too have used Gorilla glut and had acceptable results but I can also do a better job with epoxy. I always vacuum bag my wings and Gorilla glue does not foam nearly as much under vacuum so no real advantage there. If the epoxy method is coming out heavier too much epoxy is being used.

I've seen an excessively large number of foam wing pylon models after they pounded the ground. Mostly the wing skins are not bonded very well to the foam cores judging by how much foam remained attached to the skins. 3M 465 tape held better, but I have not seen enough destroyed wings yet with gorilla glue to assess their strength after the fact.

Question asked by other modelers, How do I get such a quality finish? Reply: it starts with the first piece

Nice read, there are a lot here that I adhere to, but my top 2 are:
1. Think long and hard about any modification you make. The intent is to make it better not worse.
2. Do NOT glue yourself to your project! (No need to. Ask how I know this. )

i used to to work at the airport in operations and a pilot once told me: "We measure with a micrometer and cut wit a chainsaw."
Not sure what he was referring to.

Loctite every nut and bolt goes for all birds, and then get the nail polish your significant other (hooker red)and cant stand any longer put a little strip acrose the joint, it will tell you in a short time if and when it comes loose.

+1 on all th above rules

An addendum to the cut and measure rule: if you have cut on it 3 times and it is still too short, it is time to replace the piece.

Enjoy the research and prep - its 90% of the magic. Glue a section, check and start another area or walk away (let it dry properly before mucking about with it).

Rule 1: Do the best you can but don't obsess on making everything perfect.

Rule 2: When things aren't going well and you are starting to get frustrated, walk away and come back to it tomorrow.

Each time I enter my basement workshop I always put on some great music to listen to while building.

Don't be afraid to ask for help, learn from others...

Try to buy the best tools and equipment that you can afford, in the long run you'll save time and money.

Keep your pencils sharp!

More than two I know, it's part of today's "new math".....LOL

1) Get off the internet and build
2) Stop thinking so much and build.

It's my hobby, and I don't need any rules on my hobby!
Too damn many rules in real life!
So, I don't worry about it.

There is another rule I have heard of... Don't start vast projects with half vast ideas.

LOL

I've seen a lot of half vast ideas at the flying field.

My rules:

#1: Start the project
#2: Finish the project

Unfortunately, #2 has been broken a few times in the past.

1. Take your time framing, engineering, and sanding.

2. When you are satisfied with the above, realize that you are 1/3 of the way to completion.

My number one rule is don't build if I'm not in the mood to build. I have to be in the building mood or it seems like I'm not satisfied with anything I do. I'm streaky I'll feel like building for a week or two and then not want to touch it for two weeks.

There is some good stuff in this thread. For me, not necessarily rules but guidelines:

Finish a project before starting a new one.

Have a daily goal and keep it tangible.

Here are a couple that may not have been noted yet.. Back when I started building there was a rule.

The finished plane should way about the same as the kit did when you bought it.. BOX AND ALL ! ..........Sort of a fun one there.

The second one was told to me by a guy that moved here from the East coast.... and then moved to another city to follow his job..

"Life is to short to fly UGLY airplanes !"

"Life is too short to fly UGLY airplanes!", that is a great motto. I really like that one. I believe I'll steal, err I mean "borrow" that line. Thanks foodstick.
