Default dle 20 voltage

I just picked up a plane with a dle 20 and the battery's are old, or at least not known to me.

I went to tower hobby's and got the manual and it says the engine system can take 4.8 to 6 volts. He had a 4 cell 4.8 V battery in it.

I wanted to put one of mine A123's in it, but wondered if that would be too high a voltage.

If we were talking about servos I would say it would be fine. But I err on the side of caution with ignitions. I use one of these for my ignitions with LiFe batteries.

yes its for an ignitions system, all my servos are newer ones and I use A123 two cell for the RX.

I will stay with 4.8 V for the ignitions sys. until I know better.

There are numerous anecdotes of ignitions not working right on 6v nicd packs even when the manufacturer says they are ok with them. Then you go down to 4.8v, and they work fine.

On my OS 15GT, 33GT and 55cc engines I have formerly used four cell Nimh on all of them but currently all have been changed to six cell Nimh(6volt). This is not because there was a problem but only in the interest of compatability with what I keep in my personal stock all the time.

I do have a DLE 20 but it is still in the box and I am not sure what I may decide to use but probably the six cell agine. what I would not do and perhaps its just me ( yes my speculation) but I would not use any battery system or battery chemistry that exceeded the nominal maximum listed voltage. Also agine just me but I would not use any added complication of a battery chemistry that exceeded the nominal voltage and required the use of a voltage regulator. To me that is undesired complication.

For my stuff, the battery spark ignition gassers simplicity is my goal and that means two separate independent battery systems, one for ignition and one for flight control and using the same chemistry, voltage if not the same capacity. This very much simplifies charging considerations

The 4 cell 2000 is still good, I will stay with that for the engine.

at least until I find out better.
