buying new radio

Thanks Jester,
I'll probably wait till spring but I may pull the trigger and buy this one. I have an Aurora 9 now and it's been a good radio after a module was replaced when it was new. But, I'm building bigger planes plus a little more on doing the scale thing and feel I'll need more channels. This 12 channel looks like the ticket. The only review I've seen was in Model Airplane News and they rate everything great so it's hard to see what modelers are experiencing in reality.

Can the 9303 be converted to 2.4? I gave a friend of mine a 9303 FM on channel 44, and looking at it last night noticed the module comes out. If not, what RX work with it? It was given to me by another friend who got out of the hobby due to lack of memory resources. I have never used it, but the battery is good and it has never been out to a field.

acdii- Nearly anything can be converted to 2.4ghz given the right kit. There are even solder up jobs that you can do on the really old 80's era stuff. But yes, several manufacturers make modules for the JR radios, so converting is as simple as plugging in the right one.

If the only difference is model memory and back lite, I won't go for the 9503.
I plan to send my 9303 in for cleaning ( during winter down time ) and get the ail. wire fixed. Its showing a little damage to the insulation for that wire problem they had.
I guess they can update it, not sure what that's all about.

The XG8 you mentioned would be a great radio but is not compatible with all your bind and fly aircraft using DSM2 or DSMX - the newer JR Radios use DMSS which only works with a DMSS receiver.
I don't have a DX9 but have two DX8s and a DX7S, all three have been trouble free in years of flying in dozens of different planes and helicopters.
I'll throw in a vote for the Taranis also. I bought one recently and ergonomically it is similar to the 9303 / 9503, the gimbals are softer but very smooth.
It operates on its own protocol but you can fit a Spektrum Module which makes it compatible with BNF aircraft.
The picture below shows the Taranis between a 9503 and a 9303. The similarity is clear.
The JR11X which is DSMX / DSM2 is much larger, I like it but some find it uncomfortable to fly with due to the size.

Mine is 2.4, came that way.
You can convert the 9303 fm to 2.4, I know two guys who have and no problems.
I am sending X9303 2.4 in, I bought the new DX6, came with two RX's. I will use it for indoor and flying outdoors till the 9303 comes back. We are almost done flying out doors as winter is coming.

One additional difference between the 9303 and 9503 is the latter has upgraded ball bearing gimbals which are smoother.

I don't know, if the X9303 comes back with a good bill of health. I may not get another high end TX at this time.
thanks for the info, that helps.

My Taranis was from Hobbyking but if you live in the USA I recommend getting it from http://www.alofthobbies.com.
You will likely get it faster and have better service if something goes wrong, Wayne has a fabulous reputation for customer service and I'm sure he will look after you.
They have the newer Taranis Plus in stock which has a few improvements on the earlier version.

Definitely nicer to have the SD slot as you mentioned though, I bought one of the first DX8s and it was DSM2 only at the time, got the DSMX with a firmware update a few months later.
