sullivan starter conversion to lip
I have a Sullivan electric starter that currently runs off a 12 volt motorcycle battery. The battery is getting weak so I thought about re-wiring it to use a lipo for power.. I have seen a couple of starters done this way. Anyone have a instructions or link to instructions on how to do it right?
thanks.

I just soldered a Deans to the motor leads, plugged in one of my 2200mah 3s batteries. I used a little velcro to hold the battery to the handle I made to hold the nicd pack I had been using.
If you leave the lead as long as it is, you could just set the battery down close by.
Buzz.

Here is a video showing how most of use run a starter with LiPo packs. You can make some nice mounts or just tape/tyrap it on. make sure to check the cell voltages often so you don't run the pack flat or install a LiPo alarm to the balance lead to warn you that it needs recharging.
If you have Makita cordless tools this is a nice clean way to use the Makita packs to power the starter:

just about any 2200 mah pack will spank a small lead acid battery. i have the finer edge makita adapter on a dynatron and it will spin any 35cc gasser. it is expensive but nice. if i didnt have anything but the starter i would probably just put a xt60 connector on my starter and grab any 3-6 cell lipo i had with me to power it. a sullivan will handle 24v. i wouldnt spin it all day but for most starting it will handle it..

Sullivan makes a nice set of metal brackets, and a plastic battery box that mounts to their starter. I used their brackets, but made my own battery box. currently I'm using two nicad RC car battery packs, but when they die,I'll go to Lipo's

Sorry for the late reply. The LIPO I use is the same one I use in my planes. A simple 25c battery works well. It has more power than it did when I had (12) nicds powering it, last longer too.
