Electric Motor Question
I recently disected a electric motor, and had a few questions about what I saw. I know how they work, but when i hear people say "that's a 40 turn motor" does that mean that the coil has been wrapped around the armature 40 times? Also, what does this do? Make it more powerful? If not, what does it mean, and what does it do for the motor? Also, how do you measure the power of electric motors?
Also, I know how brush motors work. But how do brushless motors work and what advantages do they have?

The power of an electric motor can be stated as input watts. Unfortunately, the e-power hobby is plagued by a lack of comparable data to describe motors in ads and the modeler is left adrift.
On a given motor, varying the size of wire wound on the armature (i.e. different "turns") will change the current draw of the motor. The designer can choose more power with less run time from a given pack or less power with a longer run time.
Brushless motors have much higher efficiency than brushed motors and are pretty much taking over the e-power scene. With electric planes efficiency is the name of the game. If you want great performance and decent running time you have to go with the brushless motors. For good information go to www.ezonemag.com and see the FAQs and do a search for brushless motor info.
