Default Sealing seams in Monokote?

I have run into an issue where I could not get the 1/8 inch of overlap with monokote. What can I use to seal it up properly? The seams are on the bottom, big oil area!

Thanks,

Elwood

Explain a little better. Do you have ANY overlap? or is there bare wood showing?

Brush on a thin coat of clear laquer based nail polish. Works good and cheap, too.

There is overlap, but maybe the width of a hair. I had to slit the covering to prevent bunched it up.

Elwood, You could cover the seam with clear monokote about 1 in wide, with 1/2 in on each side of the seam. I know buying a whole roll of monokote is a bit extreme just to cover one little seam but you will probably come up with more uses for it and be looking for it every time you go to the hobby shop, i know I do.

Clear monokote= great aileron/elevator gap seals to prevent flutter.

The clear nail polish trick works too; although I went to clear Super Poxy after the wife had a stroke when I used her whole bottle without thinking, one day...<G>

I "seal" all covering seams, decals, etc., with a clear fuel proofer. The Super Poxy has worked the best, since it won't turn yellow and is absolutely bullet-proof once cured.

Thin CA works well too, just be careful that it doesn't run.

You can also use thinned epoxy on the wood at the seam area just befor you cover it. Wait until it is tacky and aply the covering.

Epoxy works great, I use it on all my firewalls or anywhere that fuel may get.

I would avoid epoxy,. Because of its oily nature, covering doesn't stick well to it. And remember, epoxy does not stick to plastic!

I use water based Poly-urathane on my edges and decals. Wal-mart and Home Depot type stores carry it, among others. Slightly milky looking when wet but it dries clear, fast, and cleans up with water. A small can has lasted me for several years. I have applied it with a small brush and cotton swabs with decent results. Two or three coats for lasting results. I let it dry at least overnight and then apply a couple good coats of auto polish or wax to the whole aircraft.
