Default Why call it moneykote?

It doesn't seem any more expensive than other coverings.

Where can I learn to cover using dope? Do I have to buy a spray gun and compressor?

Dope can be done by hand with a nice brush...we used to use silk (Silkspan), and also used a paper like covering also...works nice ,but is delicate...Just use Monokote...it isnt that much $$$, and works nice.

Why call it moneykote?
Surely you jest. Suppose you buy a .40 sized kit for $60. Depending on the design, it's going to need at least 3, maybe 4 rolls of Monokote, $18 each at the LHS. That's $72 to cover a $60 kit. (To be fair, you'll have a lot left over for your next kit, but still, there's not way to deny the stuff is expensive!)

It's called MonkeyKote because some people don't like it. It's a substandard finish for people who don't want to do the work to have a good, painted finish. I'm guilty of using it too, but to make up for using it, I choose to hate myself so that I can feel ok about it.

I AGREE WITH MIKE - BUT WHAT REALLY TICKS ME OFF IS - THE LAST TIME I SAVED SOME LEFT OVER MONOKOTE AND GOT HALF ANOTHER PLANE COVERED, WHEN I BOUGHT MORE TO FINISH IT, IT DIDN'T MATCH THE 3 MONTH OLD STUFF I ALREADY HAD ON THE WING AND HALF THE FUSELAGE. WHEN I WENT BACK AND CHECKED, ALL THE ROLLS THE HOBBY STORE HAD WERE ALL THE WRONG COLOR.

When it was brought out in the late 70s/early 80's, it was orders of magnitude more expensive than silk/silkspan and dope, hence the "moneykote" moniker...

That's nothing! How about $1,200 in model-building tools to build a $60 kit?

ditto on the sarcasm thing.

Ok, since we've got a direction going now ------------------ how about $19,000 for a truck with a shell to transport the $60 plane to the field.

To git this (somewhat) back on track.....I'd rather use "Moneykote" than "Ultracrap".

My how times change. My first 4 channel Kraft radio in 1978 cost $375, and a roll of cellophane, AKA moneykote, cost about $3.

Hmm... Ok, I've set up a makeshift workshop in my $80,000 rental house house next door that's vacant at the moment... I'm not sure whether or not that has you all beat or not.

I'm not entirely convinced that mine is valid, because as soon as the place rents, I will be gone in a flash. It's just warmer there than my garage.

I'm secretly hoping it stays vacant for at least a week or two so I can get my 4* done before I have to move back outside.

Silkspan, applied with a mix of elmers and water (50/50 mix) is way less money. (a buck for the glue, a buck for distilled water, a couple of bucks for brushes-reuseable, and 4-5 bucks for the silkspan.) Throw in a 10 for your paint if your real extravigant. 20 bucks vs. 60-80 for moneycote. Brush on the glue lay down the silkspan, and when it's dry, spray with a spritzer bottle to lightly dampen it. (this will tighen any small wrinkles you have. brush or spray with you favorite paint. Done. It can also be applied wet, (best choice).
No you don't need an airbrush, tank, ect.
You will have a more scale-like finish than ANY iron on plastic.
Personally it takes me less time than to iron on plastic.

One good feature about monocoat is it converts into a plastic bag should you drill the $60 airplane, the $400 radio, and the $100 engine into mother earth (makes it easier to carry).
