Default Nail Polish instead of Acetone

Buying Acetone can be difficult and expensive, and for the little bit that is needed may not be worth it. Has anyone ever just used nail polish remover (the $.30 bottle from Rite-Aid) to seal the seams on Ultracote? Seems like it would work. Nail Polish Remover is Acetone with fragrance...

Did you try a paint store for Acetone?
I buy 16 oz cans of Acetone at Home Depot for $6 CDN.
Pretty easy and cheap to get.

I bought a bottle of nail varnish remover from CVS. Not the cheaper stuff with moisturisers or lemon fragrence, but the top dollar Revlon stuff which is pure acetone. Of course later I found out that you can get twice as much for the same money if you just pop into Lowes and get a can of the stuff.

Next time you find you've stuck your hand to your desk with CA you might regret buying a little 30c bottle which you can't find right now.....

Unless fhe chemistry has changed totally nail polish remover is not acetone but methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) based. Dope thinner used to be MEK based as well.

Acetone is readily available at Home Depot, Lowes etc. and reasonably priced.

Nail Polish remover will work fine to seal the edges of MONOKOTE.

It will not work on ULTRACOTE (Neither will Acetone)

Well, I guess the chemistry has changed totally. Either that, or not all nail polishes are created equal

Anything with an MEK base is dangerous especially if inhaled. It should never be used with out protection especially from fumes and contact with skin. I lost a very dear friend to periphal neuropathy due to over use of MEK before the dangers were well known. It can be purchased at most paint stores and is excellent for "welding" plastics. I have used it for that purpose many times. I only use it when I have a respirator and protective gloves on my bod.

Not all Nail polish removers are equal. They'll use whatever solvents are handy for them. They don't worry about the toxicity of the stuff... its just getting used by women to paint their fingernails... no one IMPORTANT is gonna get hurt.

(I have no respect for the cosmetics industry AT ALL)
