Default Substitute for Super Poxy Thinner

I have some K&B SuperPoxy paint I would like to use to paint my latest project but I do not have enough thinner to do the job. This product is out of production and I have not been able to find anyone that has a few cans laying around. Does any one have any ideas for a commercially obtainable product that would substitute for the K&B thinner?

Thanks for the help.

Check this site out... I hear that KlasKote is the same as the old K&B and the catalyst and thinner can be used with K&B. Give them a call. Good luck.

MECOA bought out K&B and my buddy just got some K&B thinner from them within the last several months.

MECOA: 1-800-359-6972 or: www.MECOA.COM

Too bad we can't still buy K&B SuperPoxy or the Petit Hobby Poxy. Thanks, EPA!

I question whether the lacquer thinner works. I had some a few years ago, and it would look like it thinned the K&B epoxy paint ok, but within minutes it would separate from the paint and rise to the top. I had to use it to clean up the spray guns, and couldn't safely use it to spray the paint. Maybe the brand mentioned will work, but proceed with caution.

A user's quote from the KlasKote site link:

"I have tested the product [Klass Kote] and found it is not only similar to K&B; it is interchangeable and mixes compatibly with all the parts. So if you have K&B on the shelf, don’t throw it out; use Klass Kote Part B with it, and vice-versa. The reducer is also compatible with K&B.
Nat C. - Virginia"

I know what I am going to do when my last K&B reducer and catylst is gone! And when all my K&B is gone... I will stock up on KlasKote just in case the EPA kills them also.

The KlassKote may well work....I checked their web site and it does sound a lot like the old K&B or Petit Hobby Poxy paints. Those two brands were very interchangeable and I frequently used HP White with K&B catalyst and either brand of thinner.

My doubts were directed at the KwikStrip brand of thinner since it sounded like some of the stuff I tried in the past.

KlasKote even states in their facts sheet that all their parts a/b and reducers are completely compatible/interchangeable with SuperPoxy and HobbyPoxy... but not with UltaPoxy. Their price and long shelf life makes this a very attractive alternative to the often more expensive automotive paints with a much shorter shelf life. I intend to buy some in time for the spring pylon racer painting season.

Dan, thanks for the information on the KlassKote....I have printed the info off their web site and will put it in my paint cabinet, along with my dwindling supply of K&B and Hobby Poxy paints. Good stuff to know! [8D]

michpittsman,
Your right on target, Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) is the perfect thinner
I have about fifty can of various Super/Ultra K&B paints. I've been using MEK for a while now. Cleans up nicely too.

Make sure you use a good mask and in a well ventilated area. Had a bad case of
vertigo after using MEK for an extened period of time without a mask.

It might have MEK in it, but it's not straight MEK. I think it also contains toulene and some other stuff.

OK, Guys, here's the straight deal I have an old K&B Thinner can, and it says:

"CONTAINS Ketone, Toluol, Glycol Ether and Alcohol Solvents".

For all I know, it may contain other chemicals as well, but these are mentioned.
And.....it is not real good stuff to be smelling without a mask. Know also that your skin can absorb it, so latex gloves are a good idea. Too much of it on your hands while cleaning up your spray guns can make your skin crack....don't ask me how I found this out!

Here's the results from the testing we have done so far regarding using Klass Kote components with other brands of epoxy.

Testing appears to indicate that KLASS KOTE and Hobbypoxy/K&B Superpoxy are freely interchangeable. That is to say, that any of the components of any of the three will work equally as well together as the "correct" brand.

Modelers who have a quantity of colors of Hobbypoxy or K&B but no catalysts or reducer for them, may possibly be able use up what they have by using Klass Kote catalyst and/or reducer.

However, we cannot recommend KLASS KOTE catalyst for use with K&B Ultrapoxy. When tested, Ultrapoxy would not cure properly and was never fuelproof, even when mixed with Superpoxy catalyst.

Also please note, we can not guarantee the results obtained by mixing components of KLASS KOTE with any other brand of epoxy. For best results, we highly recommend that you use Klass Kote epoxy components exclusively.

The above is directly from testing done on a mix of K&B, and Klass Kote. Please visit our website http://www.klasskote.com for more details.
