Default RE: Glow plugs????

The reaction between the fuel, heat, compression and the metals used to make the coil in the plug. It's magic, ask Harry Potter

the plug coil is made of platinum, same stuff as in your car's catalytic converter. Once it is heated up, it will continue heating in the presence of methanol and oxygen.

All good answers. The glow plug is very similar to the heat plug in a diesel automotive engine.

There are a lot of variables such as nitro content of fuel, heat range of the plug, ambient air temperature and barometric pressure which affect the exact properties of the ignition.

not very familiar with diesels, but aren't those just electrically charged plugs used for starting? I didn't think they had any catalyst action.

You are right; diesel plugs are electrically charged. I guess my answer should have been "SOMEWHAT similar to diesel heat plugs..."

Diesel plugs only operate on starting. Once the engine is running, it works on the heat from compression.

Kramer is correct, they are the same stuff as a car catalytic converter. Many years ago, glow plugs were a quarter. Then we got catalytic converters and the price started going up.

Platinum works as a catalyst better in elevated temperatures so we use a coil of wire and a bettery to get the process started. The rabid environmentalists are trying to get our catalytic converters hooked up like a glow plug to car battery power so the converted works when the engine first starts. It would probably be hooked up to an interlock so if the circuit didn't work, the car wouldn't start.

And they are also trying to get catalytic converters put on RC engines. Small engines are, according to them, a good part of global warming.

Ed I know that's not "your" quote
I thought nitromethane, at least, was a fairly clean burning fuel. Am I wrong in that assumption?
I forgot, never to *** u me Lets strap a big ol propane tank on a plane,,, or better yet how about natural gas,, I have more than enough to go around "pfffffft" [sm=lol.gif]

My guess would be the small engine polluters are string trimmers and leaf blowers.....there are millions of them out there!
