Model Aviation comes with AMA membership unless you are a $1 junior. I think Flying Models from Carsten Publications is the best bang-for-the-buck all around model aircraft magazine. International Aircraft Modeller is an interesting British publication, but expensive, and I have let my subscription lapse.

RCM, MAN, and Fly RC are all about the same: Flashy snazzy pictures with some articles, but now-a-days, mosly ARFs, Electrics, and 'park flyers. Seems thats teh direction of teh trend. Fly RC is reportedly created by one of MAN's 'ex' senior editors who left. he then started Fly RC.

Kalback publishing, who do MAN, also do a bunch of others too, I beleive 'backyard flyer & Quiet flyer are two of theirs.

Personally, I find MAN to be overly ads, overly pictures, overly electric 3D ARFs, and overly priced (just over $10 per issue up here..)

You also have to ask, what are you looking for in a magazine? Fancy pictures, building & How to articles, flying tips, etc.. They will also help influence you choice, and our erccomendations.

You didn't list 'RC Report' which most will tell you, is teh probably the best RC Mag out there. Not 'colourful or flashy' but chocked full of reviews, articles, tips, etc..

You might want to look at a sub to 'Consumer Reports' instead, to ensure you don't buy 'crap' in your every day life...

I'm supposed to be getting a magazine with my AMA membership? My membership is 2 months old now, so maybe I should contact them.

Favorites:

RC Report for HONEST kit reviews
RC Modeler for the ads
MAN for the excellent "How to" articles
Quiet Flyer Magazine for everything Electric and Sailplane
Traplett Pubs "Model World" and "Quiet and Electric Flight" because I like to see what the rest of the world is doing.
AMA's Model Aviation because it's free

Not Favorite Anymore:

I used to like Flying Models but they went heavy into park flyers and I let my subscription lapse because of it.

For the money , content , humor , writers , scale info , R/C Report is the only one I bother with any more. Take a stack of the other "ads" out to the field watch which ones are snagged first. R/C Report ever time at our field.-Mike

Dittos to that. As others have said, MAN, Fly RC, etc. are catalogs with a few articles. That's fine, if that's what you want, but for builders and those of us who still enjoy rubber powered free flight models or even control line models, Flying Models is the best IMO. RCM occasionally has some useful construction articles.

BTW, I've never understood why any of the magazines publish detailed assembly instructions and call it a construction article. I like to see plans built models in the magazines, and I like to read about the differences and challenges of the particular construction along with a few construction photos, but I don't need "glue wing ribs A thru E to spar S, then glue leading edge..." Just include that if I order the plans!

If you can only get one, RC Report hands down. MAN, RCM are also worth the money. If you are into rubber power and mostly small stuff, then Flying Models. I take them all and would miss any one of them.

I think it's funny that so many people like R/C Report. I spent a couple of years catalogging articles of interest for each magazine I owned. I would go through and put articles that I wanted to keep track of in a spread sheet in case I wanted to refer to them latter. People knock RCM and MAN but they ahd the most articles by far. They have some good engine discussions, electronics, all kinds of stuff. I found I was pitching every other RC Report because it did not have anything I needed. They brag that there are no adds but without adds, how do you find out, what is for sale, what the current price is, and wo has it. Everything from airplanes, engines, flight boxes, etc. I like R/C reports aproach that they don't "hone" up to the advertisers. The only real benifit I see is that they are more honest on their kit reviews although sometimes they focus on one problem and totally miss another. I also found they are more likelly to start rambling about the drive to the meet insteat of the meet itself which looses me pretty quickly.

I let my my RC Report go, it just didn't have any content. It's great if you want to read for the sake of reading but I got better things to do. I Subscribe to RCM, MAN and I pick up International modeler and Jet modeler ocasionally.

I think most find current reviews 'biased'. [especially those in MAN & RCM] Based on "a good review will generate advertising $$" and a bad review will "scare them away", never to return. So most now beleive a review to be an 'in depth advertisement'..

Yes but their selling point is that they have so few adds.

You'll find better and more interesting info on the internet than you will in any mag. As far as I am concerned they are all biased toward their sponsors and advertisers. I have seen many times they give great ratings to garbage kits and ARFs.

Some of the best articles and pics I have found are on RCU members websites (i.e. John VH, Dick Pettit, Giestware, etc)
who needs to PAY for ads???

But it is hard to bring a PC into the b-room for your daily ... alone time .. read!

Magazines are good for that, easy to 'navigate', and don't weigh a ton on your lap! And you can leave teh articklel inteh middle, and come back to it. With a PC, you need to 'book mark' it..

Speaking of RCU members. I know Mr. Petitt, Mr. Moorman from RC Report come and post throughout the forums. How many other people do we have that are columnists or reviewers from other magazines that come in and talk with everyone, just like another common person? (no offense to anyone, I just dont read enough of the other magazines regularly to notice names right off the bat.) I know we have quite a few company reps from OS, Futabah, and other equipment manufactures, but what about the writers and test people from the magazines.
