Take a long, thin strip of covering. Working from the bottom of the plane, deflect the control surface as far away from you as it will go. fold the strip of covering in half lengthwise and place it in the gap. Then iron it down. See pic.

Default hinge gap sealing

I used 3M tape called Blenderm. It is a clear surgical tape and it seems to work very well for sealing hinge gaps. Read about it on www.gsal.org
I usually seal both the top and the bottom of the hinge surface. It is really only necessary to seal the bottom though.

I use packing tape to bridge the gap.
Just make sure that you control surface is fully extended when it is applied. You don't want to have binding.

I use Monokote, either clear or the same color as the wing. I also have used Blend Derm tape and it works very well. It adheres wwell in an oily environment and seems to last almost forever.

Thanks for all the advice.

Giantscale: I looked all over the gsal web page but could not find anything about hinge sealing. Can you direct me? And where do you get blend derm tape?

thanks again

jabowil,
I purchased the blenderm from www.3m.com they have an on-line store. I think it cost like $22.00 for 12 rolls of tape. This is pretty much a lifetime supply. If you don't want to buy a whole box e-mail ([email protected]) me and I'll sell you a couple rolls. The rolls are 5 yards so 1-2 roll should do an average size plane. Go to gsal.org and look on the discussion board, in one of the archives there are some posts about hinge sealing. I'm not sure if there is a search engine on the site.

I use the clear 2" sealing tape I get from the U.S. Post Office. Clean the covering with alcohol, cut the tape to length, fold it in half lengthwise and put it on the hinge line. Sticks great - never had any come loose and it's practically invisible.
