If I were in your shoes, I woudl bne looing at Nevada or Arizona.
1. The wife loves teh heat, and hates cold snowy winters!
2. You can fly all year around, and many desserts offer an unlimited area to fly, albeit a bit dusty!
3. Reno Air races!!!!! Need I say more?!
4. the Left coast (California) is a few hours drive
5. Some of teh best and biggest launch sites for Amature / model rocketry. (But when does a 15', 150lbs, 1000lbs thrust, 10,000ft+ altitude rocket classify as a 'model' or 'amature'?!)
11. Pheonix, a large enough city to have at least 'one' good hobby shop!
12. still not 'overly populated' as some 'New England / North East' states
13. Silver jewellery (Navajo designs) for the women in teh family (easy christmas presents!!)
14. no need to buy summer AND winter tires! and no salt [on teh roads - winter de-icing] to eat the car!
15. Events in Vagas (bnot eh slots, or teh shows, but teh conventins taht come to town.. TOC, Bike shows, car shows, etc...
16. no grass to mow!!!
17. varous historical & natural wonder sites I woudl LOVE to visit, namely that big hole around Flagstaff..
Or some Iv'e seen just buy a motor home, and just drive everywhere for years. That's ideal too, as you're at a new flying site every week-end, and it'll always be a fun-fly / big event!! Of course, that can limit your building space!

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
uhhh really if your thinkin nevada then your really gonna have to talk to a R/c local because i live in reno and there is only one field in all of northern nevada. but its a really nice field really nice. Check out www. Reno rc club .com(without spaces of course) thats were i fly. There are 7 in the las vegas area but las vegas is always hot and its windy alot and when its windy it really windy. If i were you i would look into Ft.Forth area because there are 250 fields in that area. To find the right field go to http://www.modelaircraft.org/templat...B201FD84F5D4A5
and the right hobby shop http://www.modelaircraft.org/templat...hopSearch.aspx

I think Dennis is talking about "On Top of the World." They have been advertising in MA for a few months.

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
If you're considering Arizona look well before you decide where to settle. If 2-3 months of 110deg. heat is no problem go to the valley - Phoenix. First thing you hear is "It's dry heat", and it is. Humidity in the 6 to 12% range, sometimes less. Tucson is better but not much. those miles of open desert are covered with sage brush. Flying fields in the populated area are having the same problems as the rest of North America. If you find a good one someone will want to close it to make way for new condos or a housing developement. There are several good flying clubs and some nice LHS's. I live just under the Mogollon Rim where we have four seasons. Snow, two maybe three, times a year and gone in a couple of days. Haven't had a 100deg.day this year. All year flying, but flying fields are tough to find an keep. Drought been going on for six/seven years now. Good flying club in Sedona Cottonwood area. I live in Payson. Elevation 5,000'. Excellent club, two fields, 40 members. Population 13,500. No LHS so it's the internet or a 90 Mile trip to the valley, all freeway, keeps us supplied. One field at 3500' the other at 5000'. Retired in '77 to Mesa. One year in the heat was enough. Watched Payson grow from 4300 people to what it is now. Good
restaurants, Casino on the Apache Reservation on the edge of town, rodeo,if you like that sort of thing.

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
P.S. If I sound like the Chamber of Commerce just consider that I like it here. Further North, Flagstaff, or East to Show Low, real tough winters. Winslow, high desert with lots and lots of wind. We seem to have it made here including a town lake if you like RC boating. We do have some dandy forest fires but there are still a lot of trees. If free flight is your thing one of the biggest annual things in the U.S. is at Eloy about 60 miles South. Other than that event it's not a big thing in this area because of the airplane eating trees. Sedona is nice but hotter that Payson or Prescott and quite an expensive place to live. Travel the state a couple of times. Make sure one of your trips is in the Summer. From the looks of the current hurricane season I'm sure not many people will recommend Florida. Good luck.

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
i live in the imperial valley. 1 ama club
it's an agriculture area. if you have the land, you'll have a personal
air strip.
a lot of snow birds (canadians) or retired people stay here during the winter.
they either have a winter homes here or use their RVs
winter home of the BLUE ANGLES.
the weather is nice 9 months out of a year.
it's only summer and spring here.
most peaple don't fly here during the summer..it's hotter than hot
but @ 5 AM during the summer is not bad..
my retired friend fly all year round
palm spring is about 50 miles north..plenty of R/C clubs
yuma AZ 50 miles east... calorado river couple of r/c fields.
butter cup or glamas (sand dunes) 30 miles
San Deigo 100 miles west
Laguna mountain 50 miles west.. can see snow top mountain from r/c field.
salton sea (engineering OOPs) 20 miles north
border Mexico...on top of the weather, some elderly people
get thier medications across the border or shop in Mex.
bordering Mexicali city is around 3 million people
Casinos in any direction you drive.
vegas is 300 miles north
average 3 bed room home around $200,000 and going up...not as expensive as S.D.
but not as cheap as TX.
total population of valley is around 100000.
elevation below or at sea level

I drove through St. George Utah last year. There's a nice hobby shop, the RC club flies on an abandoned airport, and the weather is supposed to be pretty good most of the year.

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
I will second a vote for St. George. I live about 45 minutes away and it is a great area. It's not too big or too small, but has plenty to do, especially if you golf as well as fly as both can be done year round. It gets around 100 degrees or more in the summer but little or no snow in the winter. They do have a full service hobby shop and the club there is a good bunch of guys. They have a great flying field and during the year they hold some very good events, including a jet rally and a Fly-in that attracts well over 100 pilots. The area is clean and the people are good to deal with, and Las Vegas is only about an hour and a half away.

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
As the President of the Palm Springs area R/C club I can say we have one field AMA chartered club and field here. Ours is 60 x 700 feet of asphalt with 40 x 232 feet of concrete for pits. 2/3 of the pit has commercial shade structure over it. Our club flys on a county "park" with 9 acres that we have control over and 200+ acres of scrub brush as a flyover area. Its 40 minutes from Palm Springs, 15 minutes from Indio. Feel free to come out and have a flight!
Housing is not inexpensive but a lot depends on what you need.

Try Granbury, Texas. Nice lake, flying field, and quality of life. Ft. Worth is 30 miles up the road and they have some pretty good fly-ins up there. Dallas area too!

RE: Retirement time Looking for place to live?
Definitely Las Vegas. I flew in the Boston area for over 20 years with some difficulty due to available locations. But after moving out here I'm in R/C heaven. You can actually fly year round since it never gets as cold as back East, though you can still see some winter if you go up to the mountains( Mt. Charleston). I fly at the field where they have the TOC. Easy access from anywhere since it's not far from the highway. It's free and the people that fly their are great and very helpful. Even in the summer when it gets into the 100+ temps I get out there early in the morning before it really heats up.

LOTS of clubs to tour around in Central Florida, some of which have big events- Top Gun is in Lakeland and Jets over Deland for instance.
