I've been out of the hobby for over 12 years and I'm going to recover an old style pattern plane. I need so idea's on how to get the old Monokote off and how to prepare the wood for recovering.

Deadeye

Use an iron and a heat gun to get it off the really stuck parts. If a little adhesive stays behind, it is really no big deal. If you have trouble getting the new covering to stick, either use balsarite or a solution of elmers glue thinned with water.

Deadeye is right. You grin and bear it. If some small pieces of the colour backing come off. You usually can sand them down with fine sand paper. Otherwise Deadeye has it right. good luck.

Thank's for the info. I think after I strip the covering off I'll use balsarite.
