Default R/C Airshows @ Air Force Bases?

I was just reading a thread in the Jets forum titled 'Show and Tell' and saw a picture posted by A10FLYR of an A-10 inside an Air Force hangar next to a F-117 stealth fighter.

This got me thinking about R/C airshows at Air Force Bases.

So my question is, are there any R/C airshows, or full scale airshows that include an R/C portion, at active Air Force bases?

Anywhere in the USA?

Location and dates would be good.

I have some free airline tickets sitting in a drawer in my office and I just might have to use one of them if such an airshow exists.

I couldn't think of a better combination. R/C aircraft and full scale Air Force jets flying in one airshow at one time in one place.

If such a thing exists, I would love to see it.

Default R/C Airshows @ Air Force Bases?

Hi Maverick,

Our R/C club is invited each year to put on a flying demonstartion at the Lethbridge International Airshow (Canada). Although it is not a military airbase there is always a good showing of military aircraft from both the Canadian and US airforces. Us "pilots" are instructed to attend the pilots briefing before the flying of any aircraft .....here we are sitting next to stunt pilots and F18 pilots and such like!! I asked the Canadian CF18 pilot what it was like flying such an airplane and his response was "I wake up pumped, drive to the base and run into work...it's a blast!"
Although our show is fairly brief we do get lots of folks asking questions and getting a close look at the models.

Cheers

Mike

Default Air Shows

Hi Mav,

Myself and and a few other have performed at several full scale air shows, including the Wings Over Houston Airshow attended by over 80,000 people. This past year we did it as a true demo for the public. We had an announcer, 2 big aerobatic planes, a big twin warbird, a flying lawn mower and a turbin jet. We have already asked to show again for 2002.

In addition to that, we also perform at the NASA JSC Open House and Balunar Fest.

If you want a full scale air show and r/c show, we have one of those down here in Texas. Every 4th of July in Bay City, Texas. Its a R/C airshow until 6 in the afternoon, then the full scale planes go up, THEN after dark, fireworks. Very cool way to spend the 4th. Yall come on down.

Tony,

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun for the 4th.

What types of full scale aircraft are usually at the show?

Also now I need to go look for information on the Wings Over Houston show.

The 4th show is open to everyone and everything.

Anything R/C can fly during the day until 6. At 6 the full scales take over. There is always a few aerobatic acts. A few guys with warbirds do a thing. The ARMY and Coast Guard always send a few choppers, that do their full demo. Last year, a guy did a night time show with fireworks with his T6, that was cool.

This show is not advertised, never has been. It is the city of Bay City, Texas, 4th of July celebration. The city's celebration is a all day event at the airport, open to the public.

There is an R/C section to the Semi-Annual Comox airshow here in Canada. This is an active (Well pretty active for a Canadian base) airfield. Also there is an R/C club on the base that flies every Sunday, off of the 10,000'x200' main runway!
Cheers,
Grant

Default Giant Scale Fly-In......

Castle Air Force Base, Central California, usually 3rd weekend in May, every year. Huge turn out. Right on the base. Castle was active base until several years ago, now portion of it is museum.
I remember driving hwy99 and seeing the B-52's flying that stretch of hwy to and from Castle, it was very common to see them every day.
Highway99, north of Merced, cant miss is. It's on most maps.
Very large scale aircraft, strictly Giants, something flying all day. Awesome show, if you get a chance come see it, it's worth it.

Wow! Castle Air Force Base is only about a 2hr drive from me. I remember one of the other club members asked me to go with himlast year to an airshow at an old Air Force base out that way somewhere, so i'm guessing it must have been the same place.

I am going to put it on my calendar right now and I will definitely be there next year.

Cool!

Default R/C Airshows @ Air Force Bases?

STUKA BARRY,

Can you please send me the schedule or tell me where to find it when you have it complete. My wife has family in Georgia so if I could just tie in a visit to them with one of the dates of these airshows that would be great.

Default R/C Airshows @ Air Force Bases?

A little old home (or is it homely?? ) week Mav and Dale!

The NAS here has a semi-annual airshow that is usually VERY well attended. The past base commander was big on air shows and a collection of folks from Maine used to put on a R/C airshow early before the full scale stuff. A couple of problems that we ran into were that we flew off the full scale runway and that meant that the crowd was a substantial distance away from us, making seeing the planes difficult. Second, even the jets were small and couple that with fast and you don't see much. One year, the cieling was so low that we WERE air show!!
One other year, when the Red Baron team was there, the emmcee stopped by, an R/Cer from Minn I think. We all talked to him for a while and when someone asked if we could go take a look at the Stearmans parked on the apron across the way he said "SURE! Climb all over them!" Needless to say, you didnt have to tell me twice!
The new base commander is still an airshow guy but he is not interested in having R/C. So, for the past couple of shows, our local club has just put on a hanger display. The last show, we got an up close and personal with Steve and Susan Asbury-Oliver who fly the Pepsi Chipmunk and Skywriter. One of the guys in our club had recently completed his Ohio Pepsi Chipmunk and got Steve to autograph the canopy for him. We also got taken back the the hanger for some pix! Great time!
