RE: best Filler for cracks/fillets
I'm with Xrod on this.
I have used the light-weight spackles, and I find that they can melt under the heat of a covering iron.
I have been using Elmer's for years now and it works great for filler OR fillets.
Another bonus is that it is water soluble - you can wet your finger and smooth it out before it dries.
Comes in tubs or tubes

RE: best Filler for cracks/fillets
I sometimes use lightwieght ceiling spakle. (for the smallest cracks)
Sometimes Jet's Model Mate balsa filler. ( it is tinted the color of balsa) (medium cracks)
For big jobs , like fillets I like micro balloons. Depending just how you mix it, it can be hard as a rock. So I might have to smear the Model Mate over the fillet ,( after it is dry) in order to smooth it out. But it is very durable stuff.
