3D?? Sorry...been away for a while.
Sorry for this probably ignorant question. But what is meant by 3D aerobatics? I grew up flying pattern with my dad. I am looking at getting back into the hobby and this seems to be a new term since I last flew (8 years ago).

3-D is the latest new developement in RC Flying. It really started getting popular about 2 or 3 years ago. Basically, it means flying with the wing in a totally stalled condition.
For example, Hovering a plane like a helicopter is a 3-D manuver - Tumbling end over end would be another.
The trick to doing these is to have a VERY light, VERY over powered plane with a low-pitch prop and huge control surfaces.
