Quantum Models has CA in 8oz bottles for $16.00. That';s how I usually buy it. Check their website. (link above)

Do you put it in smaller containers when you buy it in 8 oz bottles? Seems like it would clog up the tip and screw up a ton of it. Sounds like a great way to buy it though.

Default CA glue in bulk....WHERE

I buy it bulk from quantum as posted above and then pour into the 2oz bottles as needed. Store the remainder of the 8oz bottle in the fridge. Hasn't gone bad yet...for the thin I've been using the pipettes available straight from the 8oz bottle. I figured for $16.00 for 8 oz vs 4-5 for 2 oz this was the way to go.

Yep, I want his hobby shop also. Cheapest Ive been able to find CA is the deal I mentioned at quantum. Tower wants close to 7 for 2 oz of any brand and their 4 oz bottles are 12. I think my LHS 2 oz is 5.99 a bottle for the Bob Smith CA. Check around. Maybe Minnflyer's LHS can ship to us.

Well, I just double checked. They stopped carrying the 4oz bottles. I guess the guys around here aren't building big enough airplanes! They also said prices have been going up on that stuff.

I guess dsjbean's deal isn't so bad after all!

Get in contact with the manufacturer. Let 'um know what you want. They will arrange for you to get what you want. I always
go to the source if there's a problem. If they won't help you,
$#@*# them, you don't need their products. Theres plenty of
company's out there that are more than willing to bend over
backwards for your business. Use them!
Just my $0.02 worth.

Default Good CA Prices

How about three 2 oz. Cyberbond, thin, med, or thick for about $12.50. So about $4.17 for two ozs. Hobby Wholesale in Canada
have been selling it for $19.99 Canadian, which works out to around $12.50 U.S. This price was listed in their ad in the Oct.2002 issue of the M.A.A.C. magazine. I bought some and I like it. I don't know if the price is still current, so you might want to check with them to see if that price is still good. They advertise free shipping in Canada. Don't know if they would ship for free to the U.S. but you could ask. They don't have the price listed on their web site yet either, so you'll have to send them an e-mail or phone them to check it out: www.hobbywholesale.com

Default CA

Hi Guys - the real cheap CA I have seen, such as at the hobby expos, is usually a strange brand that I have never heard of. Does that matter? Is all CA really the same. Are ads such as Bob Smith's just hocus pocus?

Also, for you guys using a LOT of CA.... remember the warning from the AMA a while back that long time CA users are coming down with heart problems. Be sure and turn the fan on or open the door and do not inhale any more than necessary when standing right over the work!

Ernie,
I have the WORST allergic reaction to CA. I wear a mask ALL THE TIME, not just while I am gluing. I have found that if I do some gluing, the fumes are still in the air and can get sucked up long after gluing. I open doors and windows and turn on a fan when the weather permits. Wear the mask the whole time I am in the shop during the winter.

Default Mask

Hi Jeff,

Does a particle mask actually do anything for the fumes or are you wearing a heavy duty mask?

Unfortunately some people with too much exposure to epoxy become very allergic to it also. That is why you should avoid getting it directly on your skin if possible. The allergy to epoxy can be so bad that it prevents you from using it at all.....

Ernie,
I use a mask that has ORGANIC VAPOR filters in it. This filter will filter acid, chlorine and other harmful vapors. They work EXTREMELY well for me.

Ernie,

This is a 1/2 mask, such that it only covers nose and mouth. They can be bought at SEARS or most any hardware store. I have gotten use to it, so it doesnt slow me down. When I have this on, I do not smell a thing (EXCEPT FOR MY BREATH WHEN I BELCH!!!)

I do not remember how much it cost, maybe in the $30 range??? The filters are good for one year with minimal use, so I change them every 6 months, and I do a LOT of building. Replacement cartridges are about $15.

Well, boy did I ever put my foot in my mouth. It turns out that Charlee Smith from Bob Smith Industries read that post, wrote to me personally, and set things straight. There are about 12 manufacturers of CA worldwide, and they are NOT all of the same quality. I was most impressed with Charlee's pride and caring for our modeling industry. I will sure be looking for the BSI brand whenever possible.

Hi Jeff, here is all the info I have. It's very positive information so I don't think Charlee or Bob Smith will mind my posting it here.

This is the message:

Ernie,

I just noticed your posting. Since it is my B-25 in the ad and I'm the one who created the layout, I'm wondering if you could clarify by what you meant by "hocus pocus"? My brother Bob and I have been building R/C models for more than 45 years. Bob has been on the US World Championship Pylon Racing teams the last two times they have been held in Europe and Austrailia. We provide the freshest CA from the highest quality source available to your local hobby shop (which I assume is John at Hobby Town, Inc.). Today we are sending out an order of CA to the world's largest manufacturer of golf clubs. Performance was their most important criteria and we beat all the competition, with a lower price. There are about a dozen sources of CA worldwide, and they are not all of the same quality. Our goal has always been to never use the hype and B.S. demonstrated by some of our competition. Contact us immediately if you think we have violated this. As a modeler, you are our bread a
nd butter and we want to be as helpful as we possibly can. The following is some info on safety.

Best regards,

Charlee Smith
Bob Smith Industries
SAFE USE OF ADHESIVES

Before using any adhesive, adequate ventilation of your work area needs to be addressed. A window or door should be open and/or a small fan placed to circulate the air over your workbench. When using CA, especially super-thin INSTA-CURE, always loosen the top and then retighten it before carefully cutting off the end of the nozzle. This relieves any pressure that may have built-up inside the bottle that could cause the CA to spurt out. This is definitely an issue when CA is used at higher altitudes. Never have the bottle pointing close to your face while opening it.
The fumes produced by CA are an evaporated form of the CA itself. Develop a habit of never having your face above the objects that you are bonding together. Always keep them well in front of you. The fumes that rise during the curing process, while not toxic, can be very irritating to the eyes and nose. Repeated heavy exposure can cause some people to become sensitized to the fumes. For these people, any exposure to CA fumes can result in cold or flu-type symptoms. If you find yourself falling into this category there are two options. First, you can switch to another adhesive such as BSI's odorless SUPER-GOLD. Second, you can use protective gear such as a respirator. 3-M makes a dual-cartridge paint spray mask (R-6211) with #6001 Organic Vapor Cartridges that works very well in preventing adverse reactions to CA. 3M 5010 pre-filters can be attached for additional protection.
Cyanoacrylates do not have an adverse effect on body tissue. The heat that is generated when CA comes in contact with human skin can result in some burning, however. Do not wipe-off CA that gets on your hands with a dry paper towel! Most paper towels seem to have just the right chemistry to instantly set off CA with a resultant burst of heat. While not dangerous, this can be very uncomfortable. The primary difference in CA's developed for medical use is the very low heat that is produced when they cure.
Surgical gloves for your hands are recommended when using slower curing epoxies. This is a matter of both convenience and safety. It is a rule that you will have some epoxy on your hands when the phone rings or you need to open a door. It is a nice feeling to know you can just peel off a glove and have a clean hand. While protective creams safeguard your skin, they still can result in epoxy coated doorknobs. Hand protection is much less an issue with faster curing epoxies such as BSI's QUIK-CURE since they are thicker and are less likely to run and they remain sticky and gooey for a much shorter period of time.

THINNING EPOXY

The one question that is answered most often by the technical experts at BSI is what can epoxy be thinned with. Isopropyl alcohol that is 90-99% pure is what works best. It is available from most drug stores at a reasonable price. Rubbing alcohol contains only 70% isopropyl with the other 30% being water, which can become trapped in the cured epoxy. Denatured alcohol (which is ethanol with an additive to make it undrinkable) has also been used to thin epoxy. Acetone will thin epoxy but will sometimes change the curing characteristics. Also, epoxy thinned with acetone can have an adverse effect on white foam.
Epoxies can be colored with the various tinting compounds designed for acrylic and latex paints, which are available at many hardware stores. Colored FINISH-CURE, thinned with isopropyl alcohol, has actually been applied with a spraygun to form a beautiful final finish on several models. Of course, the immediate clean up of the spray equipment is extremely important.
