HOW DO YOU PROTECT A PAINTED COWLING WHILE DRILLING?
How do you protect the surface and finish of a fiberglass cowling while drilling through it? Do you need to drill from the unfinished side first or vise versa? Do you add tape onto the surface? Thanks in advance for your help.

Whenever feasible I don't drill but rather use a small sanding drum on my rotary tool, ie on my Dremel. If you do this be sure to have some protection from the fiberglass dust since you surely don't want to breathing in fiberglass particles nor getting them on your skin.

RE: HOW DO YOU PROTECT A PAINTED COWLING WHILE DRILLING?
Thanks guys for your input, both are very useful. I do have a dremel tool and have used the sanding drum and cutting wheel for larger areas but they do chip the finish at times also, well at least the cutting wheel can, the sanding drum just leaves melted areas. But sometimes I need to make a larger hole, hence the drill bit, to make a clean round hole. I will try the sanding blocks next time. How about on curved surfaces where a block might not work?

Just put some masking tape on the area to be drilled and drill through it. I drilled a hole in a cowling big enough to stick your finger though and it worked great.
