Does anyone use the GP Magic Magnet Building Board System. Is it a good buy?

I build with magnets now and I will never push another pin in my life. I won't build any other way than with a magnetic system. Now with that being said, DO NOT WASTE your money on the Great Plains system. It's a piece of junk, the magnets are weak, you don't get enough magnets to really build much of anything at all. I built my own magnetic building system from the instructions on RCU member Caffeenman's website. You can find the instructions here: [link=http://www.airfieldmodels.com/information_source/how_to_articles_for_model_builders/tools/magnetic_building_board/index.htm]Magnetic building system at www.airfield models.com[/link]

Also, you can see my system in use on my build thread that I am doing in the beginners section, here [link]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3439708/tm.htm[/link]

I built my system starting with about 300 latch magnets, and that was enough to make a large amount of fixtures and I still have about 140 magnets to build with. I purchased 3 different sizes of 18 gauge steel to build on: 24"x72", 12"x36", and 12"x24". I mounted the larger sheet on a hollow core door for a flat surface to build on. Overall cost of the system was $240. By far it's the best money I've ever spent in this hobby. I highly recommend it to anybody that is building kits in this hobby.

Hope this helps.

Ken

I agree with ken, I have a magnet board and would not part with it. He is right about the Great Planes system also, too much money for what little you get.
Find a steel fabricator in your area and buy a piece of sheet steel of a size that works for you. Then buy the magnets and create your own fixtures.

hi

I have used one for many years with great success and satisfaction, sure beats the pin use deal.
if you decide on this and want more magnets there is a source in florida. think is the the Magnet Source. much better price. they come with the metal side plates but you have to assemble them. no problem however.

try it think you will like it

good luck and happy flying
