Why join the AMA?
It seems like a lot of people seem to think the AMA is neccessary and everyone is in it. I was just wondering the advantages of being in it and what it has to offer.

RE: Why join the AMA?
Virtually all clubs require it to fly or join.
Most public-owned fields require it.
$2 million liability insurance coverage.
A pretty good magazine.
Sanctioned events from coast-to-coast.
Not to mention the lobbying they do on behalf of the modeler to aquire and protect all the R/C radio frequencies you enjoy the use of. There's more, but that's enough to make me think it's a pretty good deal...

Nuff said. The AMA has essentially been the guiding force in bringing our hobby/sport
to where it is today.

Another plus- AMA is working with EPA to utilize Superfund Sites. Part of the mandate is that the sites must be public use, and last time I looked, we is part of the public, and there's plenty of this land to go around, and we all know what is happening to a significant portion of the private lands we fly, or used to fly, on.

RE: Why join the AMA?
Think of this... Your flying your 8 pound plane. You have a OS 61FX on it and your at full power. The plan is flying nicely at about 60 MPH. You go to make a turn and get nothing from your plane... Dead battery? Dead crystal? Who knows... While you ponder what could be going wrong, your plane continues to fly out over the road, or some building, park, or what ever may be within a mile or so of your flying field. You never find your plane. Some days later you find yourself getting a lawyer because your plane caused some damage to someones car, house, building or even to some one. Would be nice to know the AMA gives you $2,000,000 in insurance for $50 per year.

Sure do...My buddies Q-500 lost signal and flew through the roof of a horse barn. AMA took care of the repairs (luckily there was no further damage than the hole in the roof).

A local flyer had a fun-fly loose control and went thru the windshield of a truck & damaged some sheetmetal on the roof as well. AMA covered it. Another had a bunch of planes stolen from his van, & AMA paid it as well.

RE: Why join the AMA?
We had a demo going in a park (few years ago-wouldn't do this now!) and a mid-air resulted in a stray fuselage poking a hole in a neighbor's boat. AMA paid off, no questions asked, in a matter of days. Also paid immediately on a small medical claim of mine for an eye injury.
Give the AMA a chance. The services they have provided me have been fast and friendly.
I don't care if you fly 100 miles from nowhere, you need to be counted through AMA in order to keep our privileges to fly intact. Remeber that modeling is under pressure for environmental, noise, land use, radio bandwidth, and security reasons. The AMA has the only inside line to Washington DC.

I agree with everything here but this. Here the state says hell no on letting in an RC feild, as well as shooting ranges , 4x4 sires and anything else the public want to do.

I guess it all depends on what your flying and what you want.
If you fly rubber or small electrics etc then perhaps you don't
need AMA.
If you want to fly bigger stuff then chances are you'll need a bigger
area and have to join a club with a runway. Then AMA will be required
as most clubs are AMA affiliated
Let your needs and wants determine the course to take.

RE: Why join the AMA?
Over and above the insurance provided by AMA there's the question of so many user of cell phones, wireless internet, walkie-talkie crane operators, delivery services etc. that would like very much to have our radio frequencies that AMA is about the only protection we have. They do have a voice in DC that matters when they quote the membership numbers. There are still some walkie-talkie units for crane operators tha impinge on our .72 mHz range. Apparently FCC has limited their range. If I remember right, there ws trouble with truckers when everone had their "limited" frequencies. They used to brag about it on the air. Fortunately almost all have switched to cellphones now.

Why join the AMA? Well, the AMA answered your question well over a year before your question was even asked... Don't know when they put this up, but...

:P
2 million bucks coverage in the AMA?? I'm joining...
I wonder if they'll cover my mini truck... (maybe if I strap some servos under the hood and run nitro fuel. :P)
- Camel.

RE: Why join the AMA?
I get a little weary of the "What will the AMA do for me?" song and dance. Without the AMA and the people who founded it and made it possible for us to enjoy our toys, there might not be any modeling. We are talking 75 years of work by thousands of people, most of it done FOR FREE so we could have some rules, insurance, representation, radio frequencies, and places to fly.
The better question is "What can I do for AMA and modeling?" The AMA is THE legal, public relations, and legislative face of modeling. Until something else comes along, the AMA is it. We all owe model aviation our support and participation.
