Default R/C Trailer Question

Has anyone ever heard of a company by the name of Aero Express? I have an issue of High Flight (IMAA's Mag) from Spring 2001 and on page 45 this company advertised a small trailer (looks like a pop up camper). They had a 4x10 and a 6x10 that I would love to purchase. Problem is that the phone number does not work (616-435-6905). They list their address as 557 E Water Street Constantine MI 49042 . . . anyone in Michigan know of them? I was really hoping to purchase a trailer that does not have all of the height that a pace or similar has (I can not store it in my neighborhood, but I could slip this one under my deck as it is only 30" tall). Please let me know, or if anyone knows of a substitute I would welcome the response.

There's two of these in the town where I'm at for the winter. Maybe I could ask one of the fellows?

Enjoy,

Please do . . .I have two smll daughters thus the infant seats are eating up my hauling space . . .these look to be a good solution. Some have suggested I build my ow, but I just do not have the time. I need a turnkey solution.

There was some info posted a couple of years ago that they had gone out of business.

One is much newer than the other. I'll ride over to his house and look at the sticker and ask the guy.

These trailers at first glance appear to be modified pop top campers but when you really look, they are different.

They are spilt horizontally all around at about the half way point. The lid is hinged on the passenger side.

The inside is wood with the camper metal screwed on. It appears that there was nothing inside them originally. You need to add cross pieces and brackets for your models.

I'm fairly certain Aero Express is no longer in business. There is a guy in Indiana making a similar trailer. Do a search here on RCU for Dadsdesigns or Aerolodge. That should find him.

PBH,

This may worth checking out: http://home.mindspring.com/~rctrailers/index.html

It may be a little too tall to get under your deck, 31" inside measurment.

Wow, for 2000 dollars you can MAYBE haul around 4 60 sized airplanes? I gave around 2500 for my 6 X 12 Haulmark that I can stand up and walk in--which currently holds 9 models, one of which is a giant scale, and another of which is a 60 sized CG ultimate bipe that stays together! I currently have room for 3 more in racks, and them a couple of more can sit in the floor in cradles, if need be! I also carry all of my equipment in there as well. Why not a big trailer? I'm confused as to your restrictions. Are you saying that you have neighborhood by-laws that restrict you from having a trailer parked on your property? Is that the problem?

I called the one person here in town and the Aero Express Michigan guy also had a location in Indiana. He lived on the border of the two states. You could buy it in either state for tax or license reasons I guess?

The R/C Trailers by Rick Cawley in NC http://home.mindspring.com/~rctrailers/index.html looks almost exactly like the one made by Aero Express.

Here is the Aero Lodge by Robert Jenkins (dadsdesigns) brochure.... He's in south central Indiana (Worthington) It's a box, you buy the trailer at Home Depot or someplace?

Thank you all! The information is great! Yes I do have deed restrictions that state that I hae to keep any trailer in the last 30 feet of my proprty . . . this is pretty difficult for just coming home and going out to the field to fly. I am pretty anal about things being outside of the house as well. Once again these forums are amazing . . .I do not think there is anything that can not be researched here!

I will sell you the popup that I am using for 300.00. That is a heck of a deal compared to 2000.00. Is wired for electricity and ready to use. Unless you have strong arms you might want to add gas lifts though. Is a little ugly, but it sure does the job. I am currently designing and building a custom trailer. I have gone Giant scale....I didnt realize that everything else in my life would also...my trailer, my truck to haul the trailer, my debt...........

2slow2matter, I was curious about your tow vehicle and gas mileage for your trailer set up. I have been using a Dodge Dakota pick up for rc plane hauler for 16 years, got my second truck in 2000. Have easily hauled 3 to 5 40 to 60 sized glow planes, flite box, tool box, electronics box, 2 large storage boxes for misc, a storehorse folding saw horse with hobby top, a bag of tent poles, and 2 lawn chairs. In the club cab area I put a combat wing, 2 or 3 foamies, and radios. In front goes lunch box etc. The back measures 6 1/2 ft long by 45in wide at the wells and 59 in at the walls. Truck has a cap and inside height is 36in. The total square ft is around 30. Now going to a Chrysler Town and Country with stow and go seats and a low profile trailer 7x12 feet with 40in inside height. Key in both set ups is the wing rack which is just foam wrapped pvc pipes. I hope to be able to get whole fleet (15 planes) in the trailer. Truck has 104,000 with out any maintenance outside of tires, battery, and oil changes. Hope new set up works as well and gets better mileage. Don't fly much here in the winter so van should be more practical year around.

I don't have one of these small trailers but I know why they caught my attention. They can be towed by a small car and you can tow one without decreasing your gas mileage much. If you tow a large trailer behind a pickup very far you are going to pay at the pump.

K3
My trailer is not a low profile. It has a large, flat nose and catches a lot of wind. I had a 96 Dodge 1500 until this summer. It was a dog. Wouldn't pull the trailer empty in OD, and wouldn't pull it out of OD faster than 60 mph without overheating. The thing was wore out. So, I bought a new F150 and Love it. Any speed I want, cruise control, in OD--no problem. I get aroun 12 to 14 pulling the trailer. Haven't checked it in a while. I get about 19-20 without the trailer. I also pull the trailer with my Toyota Sienna van sometimes as well. Sad thing is, the van pulled the trailer better than the ram did. But, gas mileage drops to around 10 mph with the van, and I don't like to load the van down anymore than I have to, so I haven't used it to pull with since I've bought the new truck.

38,
Here are some pics of the trailer. You can see how flexible it is. The racks will hold any 60 sized plane. Since these pics were taken, I've cut out one slot on the right hand side to accomodate a gian scale PT 19. I also have a rack in the nose to haul an ultimate bipe fully assembled. I'll try to find those pics and post them later.
Enjoy

Edit: Notice the two chargers up front. Just wal-mart fall aparts that I picked up. One is hardwired into the trailer battery that I installed on the tongue of the trailer that runs all of my onboard 12 V stuff, and the other plugs into my field box when I get home. both are fully automatic. Just plug in the trailer and forget it. I also have electricity inside of the trailer as well.

Hey there
On the 30" tall idea. I don’t think you would end up with any storage room left once you take into consideration the trailer suspension. However the storage in the last 30' of you property is not a major concern as the small Aerolodge (4x8) is so light is easily pushed into place.
The comment on the looks being similar to a popup camper is true and works in the owner’s favor. Everybody knows you can’t break into a popup camper that is down.
Presently I am only constructing the 4x8 size.
With the gas prices hitting all time highs. Being able to tow a trailer behind a small car (2-liter +or-) is a cost-effective idea.

K3 Valley Flyer, I have no way of contacting you on here, your PM box is turned off? You had a question about my folding tables.
