Quality question on GMS Engines
Hey Guys,
I'm just now returning to the sport after a 8yr suspension. Back in the 70's and 80's, it was Super Tigre, K&B, Fox, OS. Which are still around. The "new" manufacturers like GMS, is there good quality in these engines? There prices are much lower than the fab5 brands, but wondered if anyone has purchased a GMS, and if so, how's the quality?
Thanks, Greg

the latter.
they work, they run, I wouldn't venture putting them in a cowled model but for a simple sport model with the engine haggin in the breeze, it'll do ok.

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
For what its worth I have a GMS 47 on my old Sig Kougar and it
runs terrific. Starts with a single flip most of the time and turns
up an APC 10 X 7 at better than 13500 on the ground.
It hauls the old heavy Kougar around with authority.
Im very happy with my choice.

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
Thanks for the feedback guys. FYI, the 8 yr suspension was the cause of a marriage []. I'm happy to say that my term was served, and I have been released on good behavior . Man it feels good to be free again. I just didn't want ya thinking I was banned by AMA or something....lol.. Greg

I've a 120 running on my pattern plane... Works really nice despite of some trouble due to erroneous propeller choice. I'd recomend them!!! Also I've heard about very happy GMS owners!!!
Regards!!!

Hi,
Have a GMS .61 and .76 which both run flawlessly. The .61 runs a 12 x 6 APC on a 66" Super Stick at 11,700 RPM using 10% nitro. Can't complain.

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
Nice Guys,
I've got this thread check for notification on new posts, so I AM coming back and reading all of your inputs, and there very appreciated. Having been out of the game for so long, I just wanted to know about the new guys on the block. Good to know theres some satisfied customers out their. I will consider this engine on my next 40-60 stunt\combat plane. I've been a die hard Super Tigre fan, and feel the same way you all do about the GMS, never had a complaint, ran the pants off of it, and was always ready for more.... Greg

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
Remember Toyota in the 60's? People talked about cheap Japanese stuff. Now number three maker in the US.
I have a .61, it's great, but for the same weight you can get the .76.

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
Good Point which brings another question on GMS; How long have they been around? Let me guess here, right around when I dropped off....somewhere in the mid to late 90's?
Also Stripes: Are you talking about GMS to GMS on the .61 to .76 ? OR Super Tigre to GMS?
Thanks, Greg

You do know that GMS makes the Tower engines, right? . . .and that the Tower .75 has a great reputation.

RE: Quality question on GMS Engines
The reason that most .61s are a fairly heavy engine is the manufacturers have made the cases so they can be enlarged for more displacement. Just about every manufacturer that makes a .61 also has a .75/.76 or a .91 or both in the same crankcase. OS has the .61 & .91FX; ST has a .61, .75, .91; Tower has a .61 & .75 and GMS has a .61 & .76. In every case the weights are virtually identical so there is no reason the buy the .61 except saving a few dollars. The OS prices are somewhat different, but the others are usually $10-$15 difference. I always recommend buying the larger displacement engine.
With the larger engine you'll naturally get a performance increase. With these small case .75s and .91s, you can run the .61 size props and get more rpm. The .75s will turn up on a 12-6 or 12-7 prop. The OS .91 can easily spin up a 12-8 instead of the usual .91 size 14-6. Two people in my club have the Tower .75 and it is a running engine. Really turns.

I was making refrence to the fact that many of the .61's are in a .90 sized case and are just an underbore. In the GMS line the .61 and .76 are the same size with the .76 just slightly lighter. The Supertigre .61, .75 and .90 are all in the same case.
