Default Sealing Towerkote/Monokote seams

What if anything do you guys use to seal the seams of your plastic iron-on coverings? I have never used anything and it seems that my covering always peals back after awhile. Thanks for the help.

I've only covered one plane, but per the advice of others on RCU I bought some trim solvent & went over the leading edges of my graphics with a Q-Tip. so far so good.

That's a pretty good tip tuwood. Acetone is a lot cheaper and it still gets the job done. I like to wait a day or so after covering then seal all the seams. A very small amount is all it takes, too much is not better.

clear nail polish, works awesome, if you don't cheap out. you do need to spend money on it, or have your wife/girlfriend get it. the cheap stuff truns yellow in sun.

Hi 109, you can also use a small brush and apply clear aero-gloss dope to the seams and trim pieces. Ben

What about the guys who say to dribble some thin CA down the seam? I haven't tried it but have heard about it. Is that any good or is it a bad idea? I need to seal some seams too...

Thanks,

Bob

Bad idea Bob, bad idea. Makes for a hugh mess. The problem with ca is you just can't control it well enough.

N1EDM, I've never tried that but I do know it will fog on some coverings. Ben

That's another thing about ca. It will fog flims, however a little acetone will remove the fogging.

Thank you all! You are a wealth of information. I think I'll try the nail polish or clear dope. My dad recommended clear dope also. I can't use CA because I'd be afraid of it dripping through the seam and into the foam wing.

Can someone explain how the Acetone would work to seal the seams? I would think that it would only clean up the edges.

Thanks!

I have built lots of models and I have never had any problems with the seams separating. You should not need anything to seal the seams.Monocote on top of monocote stick extremely well.

Acetone, just like trim solvent, activates the adhesive on the under side of the covering.

I read in a forum last year about this subject. Someone was using Minwax Wipe-on poly. I started using it on all my planes and it has worked great. I just apply it with a Qtip. Never had a problem.
