Default JB Weld really stronger than epoxy?

I know JB Weld is a must if high operating temperatures happen, but on something like a carbon fiber rod end, is it really any stronger than 30 minute epoxy?

Thanks for any input,

Ernie

Ive never used epoxy on CF rod ends, but I can definitely vouch for the strength of the JB weld in that particular application. It is rock solid. I've heard that Gorilla Glue works well on the CF rod construction also, but havent tried it.

JB weld has literally "built" the town that I live in, so I have to give it props. Mr. Bonham (of JB) has passed away, but his widow is a wonderful person who does a ton for the community. Anyway, use JB weld--it won't let you down. My Dad once used JB weld for a valve seat in a large lawn mower engine. That thing lasted another 10 plus years. On a valve seat! That tells you a little about the toughness of this stuff!

I have used both methods on carbon fiber and I've never had a failure.
I'm partial to JB Weld.

Plus, JB Weld just looks cooler too when it is dried with that gray finish. [8D]

JB Weld IS epoxy.
With a metal filling. I use the stuff religiously for threaded push rod ends into carbon fiber rods. I've also used it to make threaded inserts to attach wing braces. Can't be beat.

Once, many years ago, I discovered a hairline crack between the valves in the head of the motor in my 18' Glastron I/O. The crack was leaking coolant in to the combustion chamber. I didn't have the $$ at the moment, or the brains to get it welded and ground, so out comes the JB weld... believe it or not, that boat is still running today, and I don't think the head has ever been off of it since. Yeah, the stuff works!

JB Weld. It would be fitting to call it a miracle epoxy.

Thanks for all the informative replies guys! In my origional question, I forgot to mention that obviously the JB Weld is more expensive than the 30' epoxy, so that is the reason I would (have?) tended to use epoxy on something like a carbon fiber rod end, if it worked as well, and if heat weren't a factor.

Thanks again,

Ernie

I know JB will not bond to wood. with that said what is the best glue for wood to carbon?

Wood to carbon - either CA or epoxy. Both work very well with carbon. It will depend somewhat on the application, i.e., cloth or bonded sheets, rods, tubes, etc. For any wetting type application you will want thin CA or a laminating/finishing epoxy. You can also use esters and urethanes, but these are not as common on the glue shelf of the typical builder, and epoxy is probably better anyway for applications where the ester or urethane would have worked.

JB Weld is epoxy. Why won't it bond to wood? How could it possibly not?

thanks,

Ernie

The metalic dust that it is thickened with raises the viscosity too much and won't allow it to soak into the wood. It will indeed bond to wood, but the bond strength sucks, as the bond will go from bad to worse with progressively harder wood.

I've used JB Weld to fix a 7inch crack in a plastic dirtbike gas tank. Never a leak. That turd vibrated bad too and the JB never shook loose.

Here's another tip: Try mixing strands of fiberglass into the JB mix. I've used this method to repair muffler down pipes and exhaust extensions with a high degree of success. It takes quite a bit of high heat to melt glass - much more than a typical glow engine can produce. What I also like is the fact that after 30 minutes, the JB with the F.G. becomes more like "silly putty" and can be shaped and massaged, at will, while it's still taffy-like...but not yet sticky or runny.

Kudo's to the JB Weld Family!

How to buy JB Weld a little cheaper? I think I saw a larger size than the little 1 oz. tubes somewhere.....

J-B weld is pretty much sold at wal mart meijer even sears. you can probably get it a couple of dollars cheaper there then anywhere else. as far as bigger tubes i don't think i have ever finished the one ounce tubes before in my life. The 24 hour jb weld seems alot stronger then their quickset.
