Default Monokote on ply

When putting monokote over ply are there any secrets to getting a smooth look? I am not a monokote expert but my planes come out looking pretty good. However, when I put monokote over ply, It is very hard to get it to stick right, I have to use a lot of heat, and it never looks very good. It seems like the grain always shows through and it wrinkles easier. I think it wrinkles bc it is not tacked down well.

Something that I have done that works well is to paint the area with a 50-50 mix of white glue and water. Let dry and sand, then cover.

Balsarite works really well too. You can find it in the hobby shop.

It comes in a green/white can. Just paint it on. Let it dry. And monokote.

Good Luck

50-50 white glue and water sounds like a good idea.

Is there a glue you use when monocote doesn’t want to stick to monocote?

Trim solvent. Each brand has it's own. ie:monokote, ultrakote, etc, but they all are pretty much the same

On any smooth surface such as plywood or balsa sheeting I usually pull it as tight as I can and iron down the edges. Use your heat gun to tighten the unironed part. It will smooth itself out and adhere to the surface because of the heat. If you want to run an iron over it after it's on you can do that too. It may help to adhere to the smooth surface. Don't iron too much and always use a sock cover on your iron.

Make sure you start in the center and work outward when covering over any hard wood surfaces with monokote or it bubbles like crazy!

Heard about this trick for monokote over plywood, and I tried it and it works great. Spray two heavy coats of the cheapest hairspray you can find. It's amazing how well it sticks.
