For me.. Thumbs and index finger... It gives me a better feel and more control with the stick. But that's just my opinion.. :-)

When I learned to fly, I was a thumb flyer. I flew that way for15 years!
Then, I flew with Bill Cunningham in Tulsa. I marveled at his world class a
skills.
I noticed that he flew with his thumbs and index fingers. So, I tried it.
My flying improved nearly instantly! 10 years later, I still fly that way......

Always been a thumbs only guy. I'll try thumbs plus index on my next outing.

I can always tell when one of my students is having trouble when I hear the sticks constantly clunking back to neutral (they let go).

Thumbs only for me. When I play video games on the Xbox and PS2, I also use thumbs only since the sticks on those controllers are designed for thumbs only.

I'm obviously indecisive (although I didn't realize it) -- I use both methods, as seems appropriate at the time

I was all thumbs, then after using Real Flight over the winter (a few winters ago), I would set the Tx in my lap and use thumb and finger.
Once back to real flying, I flew with thumb and finger all the time.

I try on occasion to include my fingers in the game but usually its a thumbs only game. On occasion when hand launching I will hold the plane in one hand and the Tx in the other and use my mouth to kick the throttle[sm=bananahead.gif]

Yeah, when I'm hand lauching a plane, I do use my thumbs only.
Since I am right handed, I hold the Tx in my left hand and launch with the right.
I use my left thumb on the throttle stick. Then, I quickly raise the Tx and get my right thumb on the stick.
Once the plane is safely climbing, I switch to my thumbs and index fingers.
Out of hundreds of hand launches, I have only screwed up once. I launched too slow and with too much throttle.[]
My Flying Styro Zero headed left, straight to the nearest tree it could find![sm=eek.gif]
Oh well, I wouldn't have owned so many different airplanes if I never destroyed any!!!!!!![sm=thumbup.gif]

Crashing is just an opportunity to do it right the next time

Although Chip Hyde is a thumbs only flyer, as are Jason Schulman and Quique Somenzini. They seem to do OK.

What I would like to know is; What exactly is "Other" in the poll choices? It seems like the first three pretty much sum up the possibilities. Maybe it is big toe only, etc. Inquiring minds want to know!

another advocate from the Nintendo generation. thumbs only. I tried the thumbs and index finger but it gets a little weird when your flipping switches and turning dials on the top of the Tx, this is just one of those do what is most comfortable to you, there is no right way.

Howdy Mike . Last year there was a guy who would show up to watch us fly sometimes who had lost an entire thumb [sm=thumbup.gif]
He seemed interested in getting a plane and learning to fly . He got into RC trucks which has a different controler then for planes but he still would show up at the field sometimes to watch . The big toe only isn't far fetched like you think because now if you loose a thumb they sometimes remove a toe and attach it where the thumb was [sm=thumbup.gif] .

I generally use thumb and index finger on the right stick, and thumb only on the left stick, don't know why. On a couple of my planes that get more rudder workout, I'll use thumb and index finger on both sticks.

Naturally, my original post was just an attempt at humor. I have heard of people with various physical conditions adapting to the hobby. I also remembered reading the thread below, so I hunted it down.

I've tried using fingers and thumbs, but perhaps because I have small hands I don't seem to be able to easily move the sticks through their full range of motion.

There was a time when I could have voted for other. I used the first 4 fingers of my left hand and the thumb and first two or three fingers of my right.

It was an old EK 7 channel single stick. Rudder, elevator and ailerons were on the single stick, throttle and three other conrols were slides on the right hand side of the transmitter case.

Actually, if I hadn't learned to fly with the thumb and index fingers years ago, I would have had to stop my all weather flyer effort in the early part of my 15th straight year. I had a stroke in December, and found out that while I can still handle the left stick with the thumb and index finger, I can't move the stick at all with only my thumb. I can't even keep my thumb on top of the stick.
