Default How many aircraft are too many?

Last Christmas, my wife asked me: "What do you want for Christmas?"
Before I got a whole word out, she interupted:
"Not another airplane! You don't fly the ones you have now! I counted them, you have 23 planes, 3 helicopters and our garage is full of kits you'll never build!"

I understand her perspective.
But, I do fly most of them. The kits I have are a lifetime of accumulation. I buy and sell kits on a weekly basis.
I keep the ones that I want, and the rest are a revolving inventory for swapping, trading and selling.

I moped around a bit, and told her "If I can't have another plane, than your love is all I need for Christmas."

Christmas morning, I opened my gift from her. To my surprise, it was a Gruapner Nemesis! Yep, puppy dog eyes and pouting still work!

So, how many aircraft are too many?
How many are in your hanger?

Doug,

I never thought you could have too many. Right now I have 5 flyable, 3 are 50cc size and 2 glow planes, 2 ARF's in the boxes and 1 more on the way plus a SIG Pig kit that is about half done. If I had more storage room then who knows.

5000 might start closing in on too many

J/K
I have 10 flyable, or close to flyable right now, and I find myself from time to time thinking--I really want to fly this today, but I really need to fly that, because it's engine hasn't been started in a couple of months, and it needs to be flown. So, I think I'm about at my limit--ten is about all I need flyable at one time. I do have plans for other kits and arfs, but I will thin the inventory first. That's just my personal preference, though. Also, my computer radio only stores info for ten planes at a time, so that is a consideration as well--I don't want to buy another radio right now.

My gosh man....you actually said that with a straight face! And, she bought it without spewing her lunch! Good for you. It evidently worked.

Anyway, I have 8 rigged and ready with a couple more without recievers.

I'm almost at too many with 7 due only to size issues.

Many years ago I used run into the very same scenario at
Christmas that you mention. it used to tic me off to no end.
They ask you what you want and then say NO. If that's the
case then why ask in the first place. The wife and I had a real
blow out one year that amazingly ended the problem and without
a devorce.

If theres food on the table, clothes on the kids, and no debt I don't think you can have too many.

I'm around 30 or so and don't plan on stopping in the near future.

I have 8 flyable, 1 in the repair bay and one under construction. I know the feeling about "I want to fly this one, but the engine on that one hasn't been run for awhile".

What makes things even more difficult is that I like "unusual" planes so I wind up scratch building them. Right now in the "unusual" category I have a Transavia PL-12 Airtruk (Sky Farmer), a FW-56 (Stosser) and a Bellanca Airbus. Under construction is a Boeing P-26 Peashooter.

is this a retorical question?
Well I'd say too many is when

your taking out loans for your next plane
your building a second 2 car garage to store more model or your renting out a storage slot for youe current models and need another for more. at that point maybe you have a few too many. until then, you don't have enough. Just on the next plane do something differant, like a thermal glider or something you normally wouldn't do

Too many is relative. I find them to be good investments. I buy them, and if I need a buck, I sell them and I usually make a few bucks on the ones I sell. I am sitting close to 70 right now. Have had as many as 125 here at one time. I have been selling a lot lately. Can't wait to get back to work so I can start buying them back.

The answer is a not a difficult one to calculate with some relatively low level algebra.

Let x=Number of airplanes that causes spouse to get irate.

Let y-1=Number of airplanes that fit in (workshop+basement+attic+workbench). The factor of -1 allows for having one in van ready to go.

Let z=maximum number of memory locations in transmitter(s). (if using non computer radios, then z=x)

Let n=ideal number of airplanes.

n is the least of x, y, z

I've been away from flying since....oh 1996. This past Christmas I pulled out 2 of my old planes, I have both of them repaired and flyalbe right now. I've bought 5 planes in the past 6 weeks, have 2 of them almost done, and just purchased another Ultra Sport the other day, should be here by the weekend. Also bought 2TX's with 4 RX's, and 24 servo's, all in the past 8 weeks. Lets see, thats 8 planes in 3 months = 2.666 planes a month X 12 months = 31.992. Heck, I ought to catch up real quick....lol .... Greg

I think if you can get one of each available, you have just enough, any less and your collection is not complete. Anymore and well now you are just being greedy!!

Hi Joe,
I looked this morning. I don't have that kit. I have had one that was built.
I sold it to a guy in our club about 4 years ago. He still flies it!
Model Airplane News sells the plans. There are lots of kit cutters out there.
Buy the plans and make the kit yourself or pay someone to do it for you.
Heres a link to the plan:

http://www.rcstore.com/rs/general/de...5931&catego=PL

Good luck!

If you're single, there is no such thing as too many -- right up to the point of bankruptcy.

If you're married, you have an automatic limiter -- she will determine how many is too many -- listen carefully & avoid bankruptcy.

My Dragon's tolerance limit is 10, in ready-to-go configuration -- they live indoors & are hung from various ceilings. The number of spares, repairs, kits & half-builts is somewhat indeterminate, depending on how many you can hide at a buddy's home. I have at least a dozen in that state, but occasionally the Dragon breathes fire & the number subsides somewhat. It seems that an all-up inventory of ~ 25 is the outer limit for me.

I have 13 flying and several in the attic. I used to fly them all on a regular basis, but the past year or so I haven't been getting to the field near as often so I have decided to sell a couple rather than just have them sitting around collecting dust. Selling them isn't easy to do around here, a lot more sellers than buyers.

"Too many planes" is a contradiction in terms, sort of like saying "too much money in my pocket".

I'm not even close to most; in three years, I have accumulated nine flying airplanes (two of which have gone to the "great hangar in the sky") and have 6 unbuilt kits, all 1/4 scale. I have no interest in getting rid of planes I own, unless I inadvertently re-kit them, and all the kits I have are planes I really want to build and fly.

I have been in the hobbie since Sept. 05, I have 5 now, 3 Flyable 2 on the table. My wife said I needed a hobbie as I don't drink and I don't smoke. She even bought me a Hobbico twin star for Christmas!! I think 6 is right for me, I have my eye on a Super Sport EP from GP. Hope to get that one soon.

You simply cannot have too many airplanes.

For me battery management was the limiting factor. After recognizing batteries were limiting I reduced the transmitter count from 15 to 3 and put a Campac in the Futaba and reduced the RX battery packs to 6, which is still too many. The Futaba transmitter holds 40 some models. All airplanes needed some modification to accommodate quick-change receiver batteries.

The garage is continuously being rearranged for more compact storage. Hanging the airplanes vertically without wing has proven to be the most compact method of storage. With quick-change batteries it is not necessary for the fuslage to be close to the charger.
