RE: not many events in LA cause the wind?
I have a guess for you, but not a real answer. My guess is that there are relatively few fields to support a HUGE population, so the existing fields are reluctant to hold events on weekends and keep the masses from flying during the event.
Those of you unfamiliar with LA, it's a large collection of connected cities bounded by hills, and includes many areas in a 'region' more than a 'city'. The 'city' of LA is relatively small compared to the LA 'basin'.
There are plenty of events in San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Ventura counties if you don't mind an hour or so driving.

There are plenty of events scheduled for the Apollo XI field at the infamous Sepulveda Basin.
