Default Global Kit Beaver

Does anybody know where I could still buy a Global kit of the De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver?
(Wingspan is about 65".)

Has anyone got experience flying the finished kit?
I would like to build and fly it electric and on floats.

Any hint is highly appreciated!

Thanks and have a wonderful Christmas time,

Matt

Default Airsail Beaver

Thanks, JimO, for the Airsail hint.

I am aware of that kit. The size is exactly what I am looking for.
Unfortunately, I have read but negative articles about it (Too heavy, too fast for scale-like flying, behaving as if tailheavy).
I am also worried, because I plan to fly it on floats which will even further increase weight.
Other than that it looks like a beautiful replica of the real Beaver.

If you have made or heard of other (positive) exeriences with that model, please let me know.

Thanks again!

Default Airsail Beaver

I have seen the kit, and the finised model. Flew fine, it is all in how you build it. I have the Tomahawk kit and it is of the same company and it flies great.

I built the Unionville Hobbies Beaver in the 6 foot wing span and use a Magnum 52 for power. Flies scale at half throttle, willbe on flaost this spring. Just got skies for Christmas and if it snows like it is suippose to tonight I will be out in the back yard tomorrow.

Default Airsail Beaver

You know, searching the net with google, I came across a review of the Airsail Beaver. The tester mentioned that he never managed to get the plane airborne; not even with the help of all his buddies in the flying club ("Completely uncontrolable during take-off run").
I have my doubts, but it makes you hesitate, that's for sure.

Thanks for the encouraging reply.
I think I'll get the Airsail kit and see how I can save some weight for electric flight on floats.

Best regards,
Matt

Default Electric Beaver

Matt if I was going to go electric I would go to the Unionville kit for electric. We have a bunch of fellows in our club who only fly electric and we have two of the Unionville kits flying. Not a problem one, flew off the board. It is a builders kit and does leave out some details on building but they sure do fly nice. All kinds of room in them for batteries. and with the flap options they jump into the air.

I got mine from Great Hobbies in Canada http://www.greathobbies.com/

Search for Beaver and you will see all the sizes they offer.

Thinking of doing one of the Turbo versions and using and RCV engine.

Default Airsail Beaver

Jim,

I don't like the Unionville kit too much, because it is far from being scale.

Why do you think the Airsail Beaver is not as good for electric as the Unionville? Too heavy? (Haven't found any weight data about that kit anywhere; maybe I should contact Airsail directly.)

What kind of powerplants do your friends use in their electric Beavers?
Is any one of them flying on floats?

Thanks again for your kind help!
I appreciate it.

Regards,
Matt

Default Electric Beaver

Matt I will ask what motors and cells the "Electric Guys" are using. Being a 4 cycle man myself

I don't pay much attention to electrics.

I agree on the not scale beaver from Unionville but they do fly nice and are lite.

I can say Airsail is good in getting back to you with information. I am sure thaty can give you all ther is to know about the Beaver.

Will ask our club members if anyone has seen the Airsail kit.

I does look like a nice kit.

Default Airsail Beaver

I just bought an Airsail kit of the 62" Beaver on ebay, simply couldn't resist.

From now on, questions would be what engine/prop/cells to use as well as where to find a light and rugged set of scale floats (Wipline) or plans to make scale floats from scratch.
Anybody any idea?

I am willing to invest the money for a brushless motor; don't like a plane that's barely able to get on the step.

Jim, I gladly accept your offer to ask the electric guys what they have installed in their Unionville Beavers - just to give me an idea.
Thanks so much for your help!

Matt
