Glassing the plane provides a very hard surface. It also adds weight!
So, read up on it before you attempt it. Then practice on something other than your prized plane!

I only use West Systems Epoxies, as they are tried and true. http://www.westsystem.com/

You don't have to glass the plane. You can also seal the wood and smooth it out before painting.
Remember that epoxy will cure over polyester resin, but polyester resin WILL NOT cure over epoxy!!!!

Your questions have NO simple answers. Buy some books on the subects of fiberglassing and painting models.

Harry B. Higley makes wonderful books on these subjects. http://members.aol.com/harryhig/MainMenu.htm

Strange looking gun.... Good luck!

You dont need to glass the plane at all!! 5-10 years ago that probably was the the only option, but now all you need is a two part primer, spray over balsa, and it becomes hard as a rock, has a high build and sands like butter. Lesonal makes some good primer, lesonal is used for real cars and boats, and is very light weight..

What do you do where there are open areas on the wing?

I used clear Monokote on the open bay wings, scuffed the Monokote with fine steel wool and then spray painted. The bottom of the wing was left with just clear Monokote and I painted the top.
