Default Contender 60

I have built several of these planes in the past and still have ready to fly anytime. It is powered by a nearly new OS 61FSR. It flies great and will slow down nicely for very gently landings.
I don't know much about the newer kits with the built-up stick tail feathers tho.

Built one a while ago and still enjoy it. Basically used it as a low wing trainer. It has a Magnum 52 4 stroke which is on the low end of the engine range. Could definitely go with a larger engine. Very docile plane. Throw the flap down and it crawls in for landings. With that big symetrical wing, flying inverted is straight as an arrow.

Nice choice for a second model. To the best of my knowledge it's the first design Dave Platt did for Top Flite when he came over from England. The design shows roots in control line stunt, expecially with that thick wing. The thick wing helps it slow down very nicely while remaining quite stable. It's and easy build being a flat wing, you just build it in one piece. The fuse is basically a box, again being very easy.
One modification that I have made is to flip the engine upside down. This gives the plane a MUCH nicer jet like appearance IMHO....most of all have fun with it! :-)

Hey Turbines!

Whatcha doing with that trashy old Tx you got there?!?!?! It's missing a stick! How you fly that great looking plane with that old Tx with only one stick?

Joel (hah!)

I put a rossi 40 in it, plenty of motor for this bird. I also only went 1 layer thick on the wing tips, keeps it a little lighter lol. Dihedral thats not in the plans.

I'm building one at the moment and added 40% more area to the rudder. Followed the silhouette of the horizontal stab but with just a touch of reverse slope (sorta P-51 ish) and a bit better framing. The plan rudder looks like an afterthought. I notice most people who bash the kit add rudder area.

Sticking an OS FS-70 IIS on mine.

Default Contender plans

Hey any of you guys want to sell your plans for the Contender? Having not seen them I would also be interested to find out if the fuselage formers are shown. Might need templates for these.

http://www.bestrc.com/topflite/parts/topa0210pl.html

Plans are available from Top Flite for $11.45. I chopped mine all up to fit on my building board. You can download the manual (Adobe) off the same site. All of the formers and bulkheads are shown on the plans, but it would be a job to duplicate the multi-piece interlocking doublers. All of the internal frames and servo rails slot into cut-outs in these doublers.

The wood quality in my kit is excellent. If I were to build a second I would buy a second kit rather than assemble the components. The hardware is mostly Great Planes and Du-Bro. I've only swapped out four self-tapping screws for the nose gear for four blind-nuts and bolts.

They've had 30 years to work the bugs out of this kit. It's pretty complete. Hope it flies as nice as it builds.

Default Top-Flight Contender

I had built several Contender kits back in the 70's.
One for me , the others for fellow flyer's.

The new version is a better kit than the original
die -crunched version. I really didn't care for the
plane but it will fly well.

Regards
Roby

Default Contender Plans

Hey Charlie P.

Thanks for the Link to the Plans. I have a post up on the "For Sale & Wanted" board also. Maybe someone will want to part with a kit. If not I'll order the plans and "scratch it"!
