Default Servo in glow exhaust

I had to mount a pair of servos on the bottomside of my wing, a couple of inches from the sides of the fuselage. Needless to say, on the right side of the plane, this exposes the servo to the exhaust. Will the oil residue and whatnot from the exhaust harm the servo? I could not put it anywhere else.

Is there any way to keep the exhaust off the servo?

Thanks!

You can divert your exhaust with the heat proof silicone tubing they use on gas powered cars to rout the exhaust out of the body. I use it to rout the exhaust out of plane cowlings

Hmm, well, the muffler is on the outside of the plane. I guess I could get the flexible exhaust tube for Saito engines and just run it down along the side of the plane.

Hmm, err... blargh! What a hassle.

Of course, if it won't hurt the servo I'm not doing jack. [8D]

When looking for downed airplanes/lost parts off airplanes out in the boonies at my field, those silicone muffler extension are the most frequent find.
Getting them to stay on is an art.
Just look at the exhaust goo as lubricant for the servo.

Exhaust defelctors work although sometimes they rob you of some power. The trick to me to keeping them on is to clean the muffler good, attach them with a small zip tie and then a little RTV.

As far as the servos go I have a flying wing that blows exact all over one of the servos and I havent had any problems. I think the servos are sealed up pretty well.

Another idea is to make some sort of shield for the servo. You could use a cut up coke bottle and make a mini windshield shape in front of the servo to keep it clean.

Hi,

A variation on the advice from Gringo is to use the blister pack from a spinner as the exhaust shield. It is already the ideal shape

Cheers,

I have the exhaust blowing on servos on several planes and it hasn't seemed to bother them. Most are metal gear, Hitech digital servos so I guess I an oiling the gears. I spray and wipe them down after flying most of the time. I would think the 409 might be more harmful than the oil.

I do like the spinner blisters from Great Planes spinners to cover the aileron servos on the underside of the wing on my water planes. When I added floats, I couldn't see doing all the work to relocate the servo. So far they have been pretty hardy.

A good way i have found to keep the exhaust rubber deflector on is -------
clean up the end of the muffler good with a piece of emory paper , guess a file would do . Then get some JB Weld & make a ring on the outside of muffler at tip . When cured /hard the rubber deflector is slid over & the electrical tie wrap holds it on . This seems to keep it on good .

Thanks for all the replies!

That idea with the blister pack from a spinner sounds great! I won't do it to this plane now, but I was thinking of adding floats in the future...
