Fueling problems, engine problems, please help.
Hello,
My friend and I have recently purchased a p-40 online through this website. We received it in great condition and were told it had flown twice. When we fueled it up it began to leak fuel by means of the throttle control on the engine, I believe this is called the carburetor. Then we were told on a 3 tube fueling system you need to have it shut, well we shut it and it began to fuel just fine. At times though it still leaks even when the carburetor is shut, what may be the problem?
When we went to defuel the airplane the fuel didn't come out as easily as it went in, in fact it came out in tiny bubbles that took a very long time to totally get it out of the tank. I had the airplane at one time running for 10 min straight with throttle up and down throughout test run and it ran great. With the same settings on the needle valve I went out to the field to fly and the engine wouldn't start. I made a few attempts tampering with the needle valve to see if that was the problem and had no luck. Its a 4 stroke engine and I am wondering what I may be doing wrong? I have never worked with a 3 tube gas system. Is there something that I need to be doing differently with the needle valve? Anything I am missing? I would greatly appreciate some help on this.

air bubles in the fuel line indicate a leak,i would replace all the fuel lines from the clunk to the spray bay.a three line system you can still run muffler pressure ,connect the overfill tube to the muffler and on the fill tube just plug it with a piece of 5/32 music wire or a 4/40 bolt or anything solid that will fit inside the tubing.

Hi Brandon,
You must have a T fitting for fueling/defueling your airplane. When defueling, you are pulling fuel from the tank, but also air from the carburetor. Try closing the carburetor completely before defueling.
Hope that helps,
Norm

t fitting really is not neccasary on a trainer to defuel, just remove the fuel line from the spray bar and suck the fuel out thru it.
