There is also a NHRA Top Fuel guy I saw in one of the Mags but I don't follow drag racing. Gray hair and a gray beard if that rings a bell.

Awesome Bill from Dawsonville (Bill Elliot) from Nascar Winston Cup is a big Model Aviation fan. I think he's into Heli's big time. I saw hime during a Nascar rain delay flying his JR heli.

Ayrton Senna was a great modeler, and excelent RC pilot. I had the chance to talk with him in Spa Francorchamp (Belgium). We had a very relax conversation about planes, and he told me that doing aerobatic with rc birds, involved the same amount of concentration that driving a formula 1

Yeah, when Paul Harvey was advertising Simple Green a few years back, he would always say that it took the gunk off from RC model airplanes good.

Yes, Roy Orbison was blind but sometimes people who are blind develop extraordinary abilities with their other senses. In Roy's case he was able to fly RC merely by the sound of the plane. Wanna buy some prime swampland? He wasn't blind but he did wear those big glasses, often sunglasses, so that's why some thought he was blind.

Roy Orbison wasn't blind although he commented in an interview one time that a lot of people thought that since he wore the "trademark" sunglasses. He explained how the glasses came about but I don't remember the story.

Tom Scholtz
treetopflyer,
Do you have any info on Tom? (where he flies, what he's into) I love Boston, one of my Fav Bands. That is too cool that he is into the hobby.
Boston RULES.......

I remember reading an article in Newsweek in probably about 1986 about Tom Scholtz of "Boston" and it reported that even though he is a very successful muscian and an engineer, he was very much into his RC plane. The article talked about how fast it would go--very fast. Reading about this is definitely one of the things that gave me the impetus to get into RC since I too am a fan of the "Boston" band and love airplanes. Does he still RC? Don't know. Also heard a rumor that Frank Borman, one of the top full scale pilots, also flew an RC plane, or at least he tried to. As the story goes, he very soon realized that his flying skills did not help him much in trying to fly an RC plane as he saw the plane go out of control after a very short time on the sticks--no surprise there. An RC pilot saved the plane so all ended well.
