Default Painting Monokote Which Paint to Use in My Airbrush?

Hi Guys, I will be building a new Great Planes Patriot soon and I would like to cover it in white Monokote and then Airbrush on the blue and red stripes. Does anyone know which paint I can use in my Airbrush to come out nice and glossy? I hate using spray cans so Lustercoate is out. Maybe a good enamel or even Formula U. I think it would be much easier to airbrush the stripes on then using Monokote anyone have any ideas for me?
Thanks Joe

Default Painting Monokote Which Paint to Use in My Airbrush?

Doing the same with my POica Corsair, Would be very interested in hearing about this subject. the guy at the LHS told me to use the top-flite cans of aerosal paints that match the monokote. At least he stopped me from trying it with dope.

Thanx,
Gastronom

Default Painting on Monokote

Formula U would be a great choice. Sooner or later, that monokote is going to wrinkle underneath the paint. When you reshrink the Monokote, the Formula will not crack and peel. It retains a certain flex to it even when fully cured.

I have a similar need, I have not seen Formula U at my LHS. Where would one purchase it. Is it fuel proof?

Default Formula U

Thanks Aptar I will probably buy some Formula U and spray that on my Patriot.

Top, Formula U is a one part epoxy enamel, if there is such a thing made by Pactra. It comes in spray cans and in jars that can be thinned with the Formula U Thinner and then sprayed through an airbrush. The stuff is fuelproof and tough and somewhat flexable when dry as Aptar mentions but the one problem is that it takes a long time to cure. Thats why I would thin it and spray it with my airbrush it should dry quicker and I can control the paint more precisely.
Thanks Joe

Default Formula U

Top, Formula U is only sold at hobby stores as far as I know. I am not sure if you could mail order it or not. I need blue and red and some thinner so those colors are hard to find in jars. So I may need to try and mailorder it.
Follow the instructions on the label and good luck.

Formula U is NOT an epoxy/enamel. It is polyurethane.

Viper21,

I found pactra Formula U at Sheldon's. They don't tell you if they have it in stock but check out this link and see if they have the colors your looking for.

Default Chevron

Top I am considering using Chevron Perfect paint from Tower Hobbies, its also a one part Polyurethane although I highly doubt that such a thing really exists and they have it in cans that I can use in my airbrush and they have Missile Red and Isignia blue both the colors I need for my Patriot. You can see them here.

I can get a quart of thinner too thin it so I can spray it.
Thanks Joe

Yep, I was going to use that too but it's like $10/can and I only need a small amount of 3 or 4 colors. If I can't find something that works, I will need to shell out the bucks for Chevron.

Pactra Formula U is the best for this. I used it for the blue and red on a CAP21 a few years ago. Make sure you have wiped down the monocote with alcohol to get all the oil and dirt off the mono. For masking use black plastic electrical tape.apply tape to edge of newspaper so that just about 1/4" will actually stick to the airframe. That way it will peal off easily and leave a sharp edge. It does take a long time for the F/U to cure be careful and pull off the mask while still tacky.
Good luck

Jim
