Default Flame out problems with OS 1.08 engine

I have a question and maybe someone can help. I have a Dynaflite 80" Spitfire that flies like a bandit for about 5 to 8 minutes and suddenly the engine dies. No warning (loss of power gradually, etc.). It just dies abrubtly. I have changed lines (including the clunk), checked tank height, and a number of things but to no avail. Idles just fine and has full power when running. I am wondering if I can leave the glow plug lit using myonboard battery during the whole flight without destroying the glow plug? Does anyone out there do this? Thanks for any help anyone has on this. Fred fredlomax@nc.rr.com

Might be an over-heating problem (time interval is about right). Have you flown it with the cowl off??

Thanks, but it doesn't appear to be that at all. The cowling is wide open on the bottom and the whole cylinder is exposed to the oncoming air. Also, it doesn't "slow" or lose power like an engine that's overheating does. It's running full throttle and full power when it dies most of the time. Sometimes, I have reduced power and descending but with plenty of throttle open. I really appreciate your input.

I have a 1.08 in a great planes skybolt that I got from a friend. On "my" first flight with it I flew for about the time you did and then it suddenly died. Anyway, try leaning the low end out a bit, very little at a time. This made my problem go away. What prop are you running? Also what glow plug?

another thing to check would be the head bolts, on my 1.08 O.S. they like a hot plug

My Spitfire is loosely based on the 80" Dynaflite plan and is powered with an OS 1.08. As you can see, the engine is pretty well cowled. It must have had 50 flights on it by now and I did have a few stoppages in the early days. I put this down to overheating.

I now make a point of running it slobbery rich and the problem seems to have disappeared. I`m using methanol with 18% Klotz and no nitro and it has ample power. Weight is a little short of 13 lbs.

In our experiences with glow plugs and the 1.08 is that it likes the medium plug best, like the OS #8. We used A3's but they were too hot and made it hard to adjust the mixtures properly. I recommend using the OS#8 it just runs better. It did though, still run great with the hot plug, just hard to needle. It is one of the best running engines I have.
