Default New WW1 movie "FlyBoys"!

Hey Guys, have any of you seen the movie trailer for the new movie "FlyBoys"? I watched it and it seems like it won't be that bad. Aside from so many Red Triplanes flying around it might be worth watching. I went to google and typed in Flyboys movie trailer and saw it.

"I wonder how many rc planes were used"

Scooper, I hope your right buy sadly I don't think that was the case for this movie.

I have liked what I have seen in the many clips that are available on the web.

Here is one scathing comment that I read elswhere regarding this movie:
"Everything that is bad about CGI was encapsulated in that clip that I saw- totally unrealistic combat scenes, ridiculous bombs-eye shots and, like someone else said in discussion of this trailer, aeroplanes that fly more like they were in Star Wars not the Great War."

I take this comment in 2 ways.
1. it is unfortunate to consider that this is indeed true however there just aren't enough real planes to do the job these days and not enough money to "Make it so".
2. I would like to think that the efforts to create artificial aeroplanes in an artificial enviroment have steadily improving over the years so that they may be closer to reality than in years past.

IMHO the amount of CGI would be necessary for more than just the aeroplanes. The French countryside would be hard to duplicate as well these days and times. And the lighter than air ships, should those be created to support the realism?

Robert

First of all, it's a movie. Second, it's made for entertainment. Want realism? Watch the Military Channel and the History Channel. Check out Zeno's Warbird Drive in Movie web site.
I will enjoy "Flyboys" with my favorite Gal, a bucket of popcorn, (with lots of butter) and a soft drink. Look out Manfred Von Richtofen, I'm on your 6!!!!

I too will enjoy this movie. After all it is not a documentary.

I have found that there were 4 planes built just for this movie and a number of other modded(can't remember the number).

Bring it on! If entertaining enough I will buy the DVD! If not, I won't, simple as that.

Accrordin to the video these were 4 actual planes and dozens of fabricated ( i guess they mean full size mock ups) planes. Now as to the engine size I could not say. That video is found here:

I have avoided thinking about this movie until I saw the trailer. For some reason I thought the title meant it would be a cinema treatment of James Bradley's book. There's one that won't be depicted on film, at least not in its entirety. If you want an eye opener, read the book.

The trailer flight scenes remind me of a cartoon. Not that that's a bad thing, but I could almost see Wile E. Coyote piloting one...

Best wishes,
Dave Olson

Guys, I finally went and saw the movie and enjoyed it even if it wasn't accurate as most of us here would like. I agree the planes didn't really fly that way and the mock ups weren't that good. BUT! I did enjoy it and will go see it again.....how often do WWI movies come along. I would have liked to see some Albatros's but I like the Dr.1 even if they were all red except for the really bad guy "Black Falcon" and we know what happen to him.

I'll buy the DVD too, maybe even buy one for each TV...LOL!

It shouldn't be long before this film is on DVD. I checked my local Multiplex and it is no longer there. What was that, three weeks?

I've been waiting for this to come out for quite a while, probabaly nearly a year. I read of its production when I was looking for a model to build that would be large enough to ride in...

http://www.airdromeaeroplanes.com/Default.asp?page=60

These are the folks who built the reproductions. I Have my eye on the Fokker E.III and the D.VII!

Oh, No, No, No.

Siskel and Ebert said the aircraft were very accurate looking and all other accounts had been thoroughly researched just so that no one could claim anything to be inaccurate. The studio paid big bucks for it too.

More than one red tri-plane? We all have seen numerous pictures of them, so there must have been Lottsa dem in reality.

Is this revisionist history in cinema?

Well, I saw the movie and it was entertaining. Not instructive, but entertaining. I wonder...was there *really* a black guy in the Lafayetter Escadrille? Not in any reference books I have.

And...all the red triplanes!!! The red baron must have been cloned. Jim

Wm.
The Fokker triplane (Dr.1) was actually introduced about six months after
the Nieuport 17 of the Lafayette Escadrille was phased out. However, the
next series of Nieuports, the 24, 25 and 27’s, were virtually
indistinguishable from the 17. In FLYBOYS, the Dr.1 was used so that the
audience could distinguish the good guys from the bad guys and, for the
same reason, painted red. The combat characteristics of the Dr.1 were
arguably similar to other German aircraft for a short time. However, it was
far from being popular or long-lived; only 600 or so were built.
Manfred von Richthofen (“The Red Baron”) was known for his all-red Dr.1
There were other red planes; in fact, many German aircraft, biplanes as well
as triplanes, were painted in the individual pilot’s choice of colors.

Eugene Bullard, the son of a former
slave, stowed away on a trans-Atlantic
ship and made his living as a boxer
until he joined the French Foreign
Legion. Transferring to the Lafayette
Flying Corps (as the original Escadrille
became re-named) he distinguished
himself as the first – and only – black
American combat pilot in the war.
After WWI, because of his color, he
was refused enlistment by the U.S. Air
Service.
In 1994, Bullard was finally
recognized by the United States Air
Force as a Second Lieutenant.
