Default Need help ID'ing another plane

Ok anybody, and Firstplace.....have a flea market vender a
friend told me about....I have not seen the plane, but have called
vender, says he has a Royal Air 40T, with a (.15) on it???? and a
Transmitter Atec 4. Wing span is over 6'...it's a tail drager.
I searched all my places, and can find neither plane or transmitter.
For the size..(.15) does not sound right....says he just flew it, and the
price fits my budget.

If possible need a pic of it, or a web site with a pic....
"Thank You", in advance, Bud

The only Royal Air 40T I remember is a high wing ARF trainer from Royal Model products. I think it only had about a 63 In. wingspan and tricycle gear. It is very easy to covert to a tail dragger. Just insall a hardwood rail to support the gear and stick a tail wheel to the rudder. It only takes a few minutes to do this conversion. Could the "over 6 ft wingspan" be an exageration? (Typical of non-modelers). I have never heard of an Atec radio. My guess is that it is a Futaba Attack 4 radio. Whovever said "Atec" was probably confusing them with Atec sporting goods (another non-modeler description flaw). As for the .15 engine, I doubt it. It is probably also a Royal .45 Engine. I think I still have one laying around! It is pretty likely that the engine was mis-read too. If it is a .15, than someome put in an engine that is way too small, or.... Scrap everything I guessed at and go with the motor glider My money would go on the trainer though

Says he just flew it, huh???? With the description he gave you, NO WAY! it would be in splinters! He doesn't know the first thing about model planes. Price??? The radio is so old that it probably is not even legal to fly with. I could be wrong, but make sure it has a gold sticker on the Tx that says "1991 AMA Narrow Band" Otherwise, it is junk! I wouldn't give more than $75.00 for the thing.

Only pic I could find of a Royal-Air 40T. They are a great flying trainer and capable of sport aerobatics. Heres your Attack 4 radio too!

Default RE: Need help ID'ing another plane

We can close this one down too.....

Firstflightaviator…â€Thank you†you’re right on again!!!!
And, YES Flying freak, thanks, .15 is sailplane size, and BTW
I am looking for a sailplane….a big one!!!! to complete my
hanger….more on that later.. Now for the rest of the buying story…

Maybe something to learn here, because my first call to
the flea market vender, raised the red flags with me. So, I
came here seeking all the info I could before I called him
back. I wanted a plane for a special project, and the radio,
whatever, also for another activity. First flight, he helped
me once, and all of you should know, he has his s---
together on Id’ing old stuff and a lot more info, so thanks again!!!!

With the info I received here, I called the guy back, and we met.
The plane has 2 big decals “Royal Air 40T†on top&bot. of the
wings (which is from the kit) ws = 63.5â€, chord=11.5â€, dih.=1.6%,
nose to tail= 48â€, h=11â€, it does have trike gear, and is NOT
a tail dragger like he stated in early contact. It has 2 - 3†mains,
Sullivan’s and a 2’ foam nose gear, which is controlled by the
rudder, The plane is well built, except some sloppy stuff here and
there, and some minor mono dings and a 3†rip under a wing,
and he says, “That happened taking it out of storage to bring
to me.†So Okay, flown last week. …right!!!

The engine, even in bad light or a quick glance is not a
.15, but, an OS .40 Max FP e/w E-3030 Muffler & 10x6 prop.
OS says it’s an OSMG0140 13331 and discontinued, but this
one looks very good/clean, looks low mileage condition to me?
Inside muffler is very clean. Parts are available at Tower, and
if I bought all the parts I saw, it’s like. … well over $200!!!
Found a comment in my search: “Most folks would rather OS
had continued on making FP’s instead of replacing them with
the LA series. I don’t know the difference????

Anyway, the Tx….Not an Atex 4, but like Firstflight said, is an
Futaba/Attack 4, FPT4NBL…and YES it’s pre-91, 72.870 Mhz AM,
Ch. 54, is NOT legal, and is discountinued by Futaba…..I received
the charger, and the TX does work, 4 FP-S148 servos work, it’s charging
as I type this, and 4 AA’s (duhh) power the receiver..again was flown
last week. The plane is worth $75, & new was $250/300 I guess??
The engine is, an Ebay guess, $25 to $35 used, and the Tx..well worth
something to me, 10 bucks and he threw in a pretty good NI-starter &
charger…worth I guess 10 used, 20 new? I am 20 miles away from
any AMA club, and 13 miles from any major city, and 3000’ Alt. and I do
have a few landing sites/fields which are open enough, that’s if I want to fly
these birds really bad, I might.. Anyway I gave him $100, .he drove 60
miles, to meet me, round trip (gas here is $3.11, which really sucks)
Also he gave me several names and numbers to several LHS I did not
know about, all 25 miles away from me and not local, but they are big
and deal in planes and heli’s, plus there are AMA club members running
them. I do need to join a club again.

Anyway…this was my buying experience from a guy who does
not know planes..he’s into nitro cars..has 4 or 5…maybe plane came
from a buddy.....anyway….

GET the facts here on RCuniverse, before you get ripped off..
I guess I could have said (75 or even 50), but I wanted another
older balsa wood plane…

The plane BTW, I always wanted to convert (something) to a sea
plane…need some floats & rudders, re-mono, also enclose all
servos and receiver in water proof container and take it to the lake.
Guess I could go to seaplane forum..drop it in their laps….see
what they say? Size of floats,cg…etc, etc.?????

WARNING: There are 100’s of old Attack 4’s out there still,
PLUS 1000’s of other types in flea markets, etc. and classified ads,
and many FNG’s still do not know of Pre-91 gear, so check it
out here, b4 you buy!!

I experiment a lot with the older radios so I wanted it anyway
since I am a CET, so no biggie with me,
…I am happy camper…..

You all fly high, be safe. And Thanks again for info…

if the transmitter has a gold sticker on it anywhere it is legal and since you said the servos are 148' that would mean that the reciever may be a 114 which is narrow band and also legal to use.I fly kraft tx that are over 30 years old and are narrow band and legal to use, some are fm and use current jr recievers or kraft dual conversion rx.if you do not have a cyler to test the batteries it would be advisable to replace them.cost of batteries versus total cost of oplane, engine radio etc

Sounds like you got a good deal! As always, I am happy to help, love sluething old model airplane stuff I have an old OS .40FP. I bought the engine used at a swap shop in the early 1980's. It has been installed it on at least a dozen planes since I have had it. It still runs great! It's a keeper But, $100.00 delivered... That is a very good deal! I also think it would make a fantastic float plane. Keep us posted.

aerowoof, Thanks for your input....I stand corrected!!!

The Attack 4, FTP4NBL has the sticker and is legal, it has
an FP-R114 rec. which is listed, along with the Tx.....so, I am not using it for any experiments...hehe my deal became even sweeter, I will check it out in my shop,
and get a new battery for it...and use it!!!!

If others are interested Go here:

http://www.futaba-rc.com/faq/service-faq.html and Find the answers to these two questions:

A. Please explain narrow band to me. How do I know if my transmitter is legal to use? Can I get it upgraded if it is not? Is my receiver safe to use?

B. How do I know if my transmitter is legal?

And, here is Frequency charts: http://www.futaba-rc.com/faq/frequency.html
go here:

Again, Thank you aerowoof.....

I had a .40 FP I flew in my Falcon 56 back in the late 80's - early 90's, great average engine with no quirky habits. I did find that it ran better if you placed a small piece of fuel tubing over the threads on the needle valve, it seemed to leak air there. Gave the engine to a friend that was just starting when I graduated up to slightly bigger models.

Just joined a local club last year and the first meeting I went to, a member had a brand new in the box .40 FP with no paper work or anything but the engine never had a drop of fuel through it and he was getting rid of it. I asked how much and when he said $20, I told him consider it sold. Gave him the $20 and now I have a good reliable engine for the Dynaflite Funscale P-40 I'm finally finishing up for weekend fun flys and such. Was going to put in a Magnum .52 4 stroke but I decided to keep it simpler. A good 10-6 prop and that .40 FP will be more than enough to fly that plane.

Thanks John,

OS .40FP's, I am learning, and hearing more and more about
them every day, and a new one for 20 bucks....wow...you
did score....and makes my deal even sweeter by the minute.
I like that tube info...I put some on another needle valve b4, but
not for a fuel leak, it was to keep my paws further away from the
spinning prop..hehe...I plan to crank this one up real soon and
see what it does....as I mentioned there are lots of parts out
there for them..
BTW: you running 15% ...right?

You fly high...be safe, later ..bud
