Default Balsa filler question

I am curious. I had ordered some balsa filler and used it all up. Can I just use some typical drywall compound as a suitable replacement?

Monokote/Ultracote will be applied over it.

Thanks,
Tom

I have heard of people using lightweight spackling.

Is drywall compound (drywallers call it mud) and spackle the same thing?

It has "lightweight spackling" on the tub. Mud and other spackling are really heavy. In a pinch I've used balsa dust and wood glue.

Drywall mud and light weight spackle are two different things. Lightweight spackle doesn't weigh anything drywall mud us way heavy..

i use light weight spakle. covering doesn't want to stick to it in a large area, the remedy for that is sauve cheapy hair spray. and then a light sanding. hair spray will let the covering stick better and makes it easier to work out any wrinkles
dont use anything but light weight. when you pick some up just pick up some regular spakle and compair the weight.

I use Elmer's Wood Filler. It's very lightweight, doesn't shrink when it dries, and it's a light wood color so it blends pretty well so it doesn't show through covering like white spackling can. I used to use lightweight spackle but like Elmer's much better.

I have just tried the Elmer's Carpenter's Professional Wood Filler (Natural). Comes in a tube and costs less the $ 3.00. Probably similar the wood filler RCKen described. I am using it for the first time on my current build and at this point I really like it. Squeeze a little out of the tube like toothpaste and apply it. Let it dry and sand it and it does sand easily and dries hard. I don't know whether or not heat will affect it when I start to cover the plane. We'll see, but for now it looks good, real good.
