Default how to clean rust off of crank shaft?

I have a OS 91 surpass in great shape with little use but it's been sitting around for a long time and has collected some rust. It doesn't look too bad on the crank shaft but I'm sure it should be cleaned, here's some pics..

I've used the little wire brush that came with my dremel. Just a light touch. Looks like new in about 3 minutes.

You can soak it in a compound like Nava Jelly or CLR. A soft bristle wire brush works too. Ihave even sandblasted a couple.

I would cook it in the crock pot without taking it apart any further. And then flush thoroughly with water and oil it down good. Then I would run the engine for a few minutes and oil it again.

Guy's,

I haven't ever had a reason to take one of my engines apart, what causes rust in an oily environment? Is it the nitro in the fuelor humidity in the air?

Disimilar metals. Steel in contact with aluminum will always rust due to the different oxidation states. Then the fuel is slightly corrosive itself. Its not unusual to have some rust. THe bearings are the achilles heel in this situation. They tend to rust also because they are steel. If they pit, they don't work right anymore. I would change them while I had the engine apart. Just tear down the engine as far as you can. Then stick the case in the oven for about 5 minutes to warm and expand the case, the bearings will drop right out.

Nitro fuel, being manily composed of alcohol will cause rust, period. Alcohol is hydroscopic in nature; it literally sucks moisture out of the air -- this is why there is rust. After run oil is/has been stated to help prevent rust build up, and help keep moving parts moving. I personally don't use after run oil since the fuels I use are synthetic oil based blends -- it isn't needed.

I have acutually blued a few crankshfts in the past with firearm bluing liquid. You have a choice of hot or cold bluing. Cold dosen't last as long a s the hot (potassium nitrate and/or sodium hydroxide).
