Sealing/Fuel proofing covering???????
Hi all.
Almost finished my Sig Somethin Extra, but I have a question.
The covering scheme I'm using has a few areas where some fuel might leach it's way under the covering and risk lifting it.
I'm using SIG Aerokote btw, seems to be pretty good stuff, sticks well to wood, and sticks like **** to a blanket on itself!!
Anyways, whats a good method for sealing the covering on edges, corners etc just for that added piece of mind?
I've read a few posts that say use polyurethane, but do I use water or oil based??
Would an enamel clear work?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Sean

RE: Sealing/Fuel proofing covering???????
Sean,
Balsa-Rite for covering works very well too. It comes in a small can and you apply it with a modelers paint brush. I used it on my Great Planes Skybolt biplane that I added 1"x1" squares to in a checkerboard fashion. I didn't lose one square, even in areas of direct exhaust contact.
Fly safe and have fun!!

RE: Sealing/Fuel proofing covering???????
I've use clear nail polish. Worked for a little while but 1 it turned yellow and 2 the trim started coming up This last time I've applied clear dope over the trim. You can't see it when dried and I'll have to wait until I start flying the plane to see if it holds up.

I would also suggest Balsa-Rite. Before I cover I paint all the front end area and wherever I feel exhaust will work on the covering, seem to hold the covering down and also makes the wood fuel proof.
