Default When 2 adjust 4stroke valves?

I hear people talk about adjusting the valves on 4 strokes. Well, when do you know you need to? I have a used O.S. 120 with a pump and dont know how much time is on it. It seemed to run fine, then today it just decided to die in the air causing my mustang to need its frontend rebuilt. I havent figured out yet what caused it,but I was just curious about if the valves could use a tune up,but have to idea how or IF I even need to. Whatta ya think?

I just downloaded the manual from O.S. and it covers this topic pretty good!

Really low compression would be the first sign. There's nothing wrong with checking them anyways. Usually, once the valves are set, they stay put for a long time.

Always do it immediately, occasionally one will need adjustment right out of the box. Do it next after about an hours running. After that, onlly need to do it when you notice a change in performace, probably about once per year. Of course, when you buy a used one, always check the valve clearance before operating it the first time unless you know the owner and have recently seen it being run.
