Default Sig Somethin Extra Engine

I purchased a SSE with a OS .40 installed. Will this engine make the plane way under powered or is there not that much difference between it and a .46? Also where is the CG checked on this plane. With the smaller engine will this cause the inherit tail heavy problem to be greater. Has anyone used a .40 on this model?

Ive flown my own SSE and other members SSEs with a number of different
motors including an OS40 FX, Thunder Tiger GP42, Thunder Tiger 46Pro
and OS50 SX.

All flew very well. The SSE is light weight and doesnt require
an overly large motor...however the smaller motors lack a
bit in vertical performance.

My own SSE has the TT46 Pro on it and Im very happy with
that turning an APC 11.5 X 4.

I would say fly it with the motor you have and judge for yourself
whether or not it needs more power for your flying style.

Oh...and on the CG Sig recommends the CG to be 3 1/2 inches back from
the leading edge. However this plane is quite tolerant of CG position so
dont worry too much about getting it exact.

OS .46 AX will pull this plane nicely with a 12.25 x 3.75(not fast but pulls like a tractor for 3d and IMAC stuff) - not sure what kind of performance the .40 will yield. I removed the muffler baffle and added an exhaust deflector - both items yielding a few extra hundred RPM. My AUW is 5lbs 9oz fwiw.

Stock CG per the manual is the back edge of the main wing spars. Folks move the CG back further (up to 2") behind the point at the main wing spars point for 3D goodness.

The 40 will fly it but I'd get myself an OS .46AX or something similar. With the right prop, performance on the SSE will be outstanding.

For what its worth, I fly mine with a Saito .56 and absolutely love it. Before flying it, I really worried about it being under-powered as I read all sorts of posts here with bigger engines. As far as I'm concerned this is just right for me; I have neve felt the need for more engine. As was said earlier, this is one light airframe.

Have fun!

A good .46 and this plane will provide a lot of enjoyable flying. Mount the motor on its side so that the exhaust is out the bottom of the plane though. My motor is upright and fuel gets into the canopy hatch. Here is a picture of mine before I put the motor in. I installed a Magnum .46.

I side mounted the motor on my SE, to get a nice upper turtledeck line.
My less than perfect landings broke the muffler.

You didn't specify which 40 is on it. If it is a FP or LA, it's going to be underpowered. I have one I bought cheap and put a Saito 91 on - talk about vertical!

Rotating the engine does clean up the lines nicely...
