Default Electric fuel pumps

Ok, I have gone through 2 Hangar 9 Electric fuel pumps in a year. The last one didn't even have a full gallon run through it before it quit. I really like the electric pumps, they work well when they work at all. Is there a better solution than the Hangar 9 pump? I would like to have something that will last at least a couple of years, or at least 15-20 gallons. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!!

I gave up on the electrics years ago. A nice hand-crank type velcroed to your fuel jug and you can move it from plane to plane without having to bring the whole flightbox with you.

Ditto on handpumps. I have a Hobbico pump attached to my fieldbox and it's worked well over the years.

I gave up on electrics a long time ago, too.

Yeah I really want an electric. I like 'em, and I guess I am a little lazy. Anyone try the Slimline pump? Tower has it for like $55 or something. For that price I would imagine it is a decent pump.

Still using the same electric pump I bought back in the 60's. Third motor. getting a little noisy but still works. Back when quality came first and and a name to be stood behind.

I've been using a Hobbico pump for the last four years without a hitch. Price was right too. Price on Slimline is awfully steep.

I have two of the slimline pumps and really like them. They are well made and seem durable. Three years on my first one so far with no problems.

JLLayton,
Did you have the model SL-2000 Slimline or is it the Boxer model?

Thanks for the info.

I too gave up on the electrics. Tried an old Tower Hobbies fuel pump... it pumped maybe 48 ounces of fuel before it died. Then tried the windshield washer pump. Lasted longer, but the motors on them are not made to run more than a second or two... when filling a 12 ounce tank, the motor will overheat. Also had problems with the pump binding up. I don't recommend them.

I've been using a Dave Brown Six Shooter pump since then (this pump is now maybe 19 (?) years old and works perfectly. You just have to change out the pump tube every few years, and it works as good as new again. I highly recommend the Six Shooter. It's great!

Default A Reliable Pump

A friend of mine sells small pumps usually for industrial or chemical applications. Check them out at http://www.greylor.com The 240000 PQ Gear Pump will run forever on 12 VDC and pump fuel like crazy. We saw lots of them pumping jet fuel at Florida Jets 2003

I have been using the same sonic tronics electric pump for about 15 years. Never done anything to it. Still going strong.

Default Yup - I'm with Flyboy.............

He's got me beat by a little though. My sonic tronics pump has been replaced once in aprox 15-18 years. Truth be known, the one that went bad had been sitting for 5 years unused. Worked for a short while, then gave up. I like em ( the pump that is -- well Flyboy's OK too) [least that's what I was told] {come to think of it -- Flyboy's the on that told me -- HAAAAY!!} :devious:

I have one of Slimline's boxxer pumps. Can't really speak about its durability, as I used it for the first time last weekend. It is well built though, and comes with a nice aluminum mount.

Information and a pic detailing how I mounted it into my new field box can be found here.

It seemed like it was pulling a lot of air in from somewhere. Lots of air bubbles in the fill line and was terribly slow. I probably have a leak somewhere in the plumbing.

Well I just picked up a Hobbico Mk II or III, I can't remeber which. I am going to send the 2 Hangar 9's back to get them replaced. If the Hobbico goes, I will at least have a backup, and then I will promptly order the Slimline or the sonic tronics. You don't think Nitro % could shorten the life do you? I run 30% nitro in my Saitos.
Also, what about 12v versus 6 v. Think they might last longer(although pump slower) on 6v?

I also run 30% nitro. I'm sure that the high nitro fuels aren't good for the pump's seals. My old MK hand-crank pump is at least 5 years and still works great - I always made a point of cranking the pump dry each time I used it. Couldn't hurt to do this with the electric pump.

Pigman, When you say it quit, what exactly went wrong?

Did the motor burn out, gears broke, switch broke ??? There are not many parts in the thing... just those listed above, and the case.

I have the Hanger 9 pump, I have found that the gears dry out after a period of non-use. If that happens, the pump will run won't draw fluid. You need to manually prime the pump to get it working again - I just suck some fuel through the pump to get it started. That is all it takes. After that, as long as gears are wet (a bit of residual oil from the fuel), then mine works fine.

I took it apart, the arm that spins the gears inside the pump broke off.
