Default Filler for epoxy glassed cowl

Any suggestion what filler to use to fill pin holes and mold seams on an epoxy based cowl. Made by Fiberglass specialties.

Frencie,
Bondo indeed. It's a great filler. Easy to sand. Easy to paint. You can't go wrong with it.

I can't remember the maker but it is called 1/2 &1/2 a 2 part finish filler. It dries real fast as you can mix more hardner. It sands like a dream & it's very light. Any autoparts store should have it --NAPA etc.

Frenchie,
I am building a fiberglass plane and I used the Bondo brand spot putty. Comes in a tube the size of toothpaste. I got mine from Autozone in the body repair section. It is red in color but if you go to a Auto paint store you can also get it in a lite green . That way if you use a lite color paint it wont show through. Very easy to work have a soft plastic squeegie to spread the stuff .it dries pretty fast so use only a small amount at a time.

If you mix epoxy with micro balloons until it is a paste it will sand quite a bit easier. Does not spread near as nice as spot putty and doesn't sand as nice as spot putty. but it is tougher than spot putty.

Normally i'll fill big seams with epoxy micro balloons. Then go over it with spot putty to fill any minor stuff i've mixed. Just beware if you gob the micro balloon paste all over everything you will need a ton of hardwork and sanding to work it down.

If you need to use a scratch filler or repair slight imperfections , I highly recommend using this. [link=http://http://www.napaonline.com/NOLViewer/Pages/Detail.aspx?R=15563&ShowPics=1]Polyester filler[/link] .

It is a polyester base resin , that is 2 parts . It is a far more superior product than spot putty.

I wont allow spot putty in my shop and I would recommend staying away from Bondo products , there are much better products on the market that last longer , handle better and dont shrink as much . Bondo is a low end product and performs like a low end product.

Now before I get slapped up aside the head for knocking Bondo products , if your satisfied with the results Bondo products give you , then by all means use it . I have no experience using it on RC planes , but on Motorcycles , street rods, Custom paint jobs etc, I do .

Ever have a car repaired ,it looked great when you picked it up , but several months down the road after it has set in the sun, you start seeing scratches and lines in the repair ? Or it looks like the repair is bleeding up thru the paint ? That spot putty for ya.

A word of warning.

Most/Some Polyester based products will not cure over epoxy based parts.

I've built many street rods & old Vettes. I've always used 1/2 &1/2- 2 part finish filler & Never had any problems.. It sands sooo easy & the dust falls down not airboure. I agree on the red stuff-- it's low- low end and it will shrink & keep on shrinking!!

Evercoat Easy works well, and dries nicely (enough to sand) in about 20 minutes.

If I have several hours to wait, I use Super-fil from aircraft Spruce. That stuff sands and feathers very nicely, and is light weight.

The only product i could fine at store was the evercoat, a can of this and the hardener (small tube) looks like I'll be able to do at least hundred and fifty cowls-$12 bucks. If anybody needs some call. Hope this does the trick.

Thinking positively 150 cowls means your gonna live a long long time!! If you think negatively, then your gonna be repairing a whole lot of cowls in your lifetime!! ! Let's see,--- either way, ya win..

I asked about the 1/2 &1/2 said they never heard of it. I only needed the smallest amount and got this quart size container, so looks like I'll be sharing with club members. I don't think one could use that much in their lifetime. Hope the stuff works well.

The Evercoat is even better than the 3M . Dont mix it on cardboard or anything that will soak up the resins .

You'll be surpised how often you use it if you build much. When I need a quick and easy fix, thats what I go for.

I've burned through a quart (took about 4 years) and have started on Quart #2.

I like it, but hate the smell.

How did it work?
