Default Ultracote on fiberglass?

Will ultracote stick and stay stuck to fiberglass? I can't find a fuel-proof paint to match the dark blue(I think they call it midnight blue)ultracote. Rather than have the cowl not match the fuse I was thinking about just covering it with the ultracote. Any thoughts? Steve

Model Airplane News used to have a tutorial, but they are now defunct. I did a Google for covering fiberglass with monokote, and got a few articles to read. I've never tried it with Ultracoat, but have covered fiberglass with monokote before. Base coat paint first, then just enough heat to get the monokote trim pieces down (not the vinyl, but regular monokote cut into trim stripes or whatever). The key is to avoid compound curves. After they Monokote is laid down, start by dusting your clear coat on. You should clear coat enough that the Monokote is totally encapsulated in the clear coat. The cowl and wheel pants on these two planes were done with that method.

You can also take a swatch of your covering to a good automotive paint store. They can scan it and even put it into a spray can complete with catalyst (use within 18 hours). This can be expensive, though.

Hi!
Oracover (Ultracote) is much easier to use when covering a glassfiber fuselage than Monokote. Just sand the fuselage with 240 paper and go at it.

Ya know that's funny 'bout what Deadeye said concerning MAN, considering I was just reading Feb's 2008 issue today. Me thinks he meant to say RC Modeler.

Right you are. I knew it was one of those glossy, ad-bloated rags.

I'd have to agree with your opinion of MAN - RCM - Model Flyer etc. etc. The only reason I was reading a MAN was cause I was having a $5 cup of coffee at Barnes Nobel's Starbuck's with my wife. I have canceled my subscriptions to all the AD Rags and now get my reading fix with RC Report and of course the required Model Aviation.

Have you considered latex paint. take a piece of your covering to a good paint store and they can match it. Spray it on and let it sit for a week to cure and topcoat.
