This may be a basic question, but I cpould use some recommendations. Up to now I have always used an engine at the top of the recommended range for any plane I built. Now I am flirting with scale and matching engine to airframe gives me more options. I play exclusively in the .40 - .60 size league so I would like to find a good scale that will be reasonably accurate in the 4 to 10 pound range. Have already tried bathroom scales (With and without me on it) and a "good" fish scale. Neither gave accurate results in the range I work in. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced scale that will keep me happy?

You could always take it to the post office. Their scales are very accurate.

Scales are most accurate in the middle of their range. That's why a bathroom scale just doesn't cut it for the size models you're talking about.

Try to find a good baby scale.

In the kitchen gadet isle at Wally World they have a digital scale that does up to 5 pounds. It wieghs with grams or Lbs. You cabn weigh the wing then the fuse to get the total weight of the plane.

I vote for the baby scale also. They are in the right range for you and you can get them cheap or free. Just check out garage sales, Goodwill, or friends who have two year olds.

The best part is the basket is great for holding the model.

Thanks for the responses. The baby scale bit sounds like a winner. The right range and, at my age, sure to cause some talk when I start shopping the garage sales.

Do a search on ebay got mine there for $35.00 0-13 lbs and it's smaller than a phone book.

I have a Columbis Family Scale with the date April 16, '07 on the dial. It is zero settable with a thumb screw on top and reads in one ounce increments up to 24 lbs. It has a 6" dial so it's pretty easy to estimate half ounce's between the lines. I think I paid $5 at a church bazzar.

I bought my Escali digital postal scale off ebay about a year ago for $30 something. I've been very happy with it - runs off either a 9volt battery or included 110v adaptor.

It measures up to 25lb in 1/10 oz increments and also weighs in grams. Here's a link to their direct site:

THE BEST SCALE that I have found is a digital fish scale!! Before I used it I challenged it against some calibated weights at five reading from 0-50 lbs. The most it was off was 0.1 lbs. Will have to check on the name brand if you are interested. They were around $35-37.

Thanks for all the inpts, guys. After careful (?) consideration, I sprung for the 25-pound postal scale from Digital Scales Direct. A little pricey for the use it will get, but I am happy with it on the first two models to get weighed out. Solid repeat readings (within an ounce). Thanks again. I'm off to weigh something else!

I just happen to have one of these in my tackle box (That other hobby). They cost less than $ 20.00 usd It is a Rapala Digital Fish Scale and it works great for RC Planes and Salmon
